Mind's Eye
Mind's Eye | Oliver W Sacks
5 posts | 9 read | 10 to read
With compassion and insight, Dr. Oliver Sacks again illuminates the mysteries of the brain by introducing us to some remarkable characters, including Pat, who remains a vivacious communicator despite the stroke that deprives her of speech, and Howard, a novelist who loses the ability to read. Sacks investigates those who can see perfectly well but are unable to recognize faces, even those of their own children. He describes totally blind people who navigate by touch and smell; and others who, ironically, become hyper-visual. Finally, he recounts his own battle with an eye tumor and the strange visual symptoms it caused. As he has done in classics like "The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" and "Awakenings," Dr. Sacks shows us that medicine is both an art and a science, and that our ability to imagine what it is to see with another person's mind is what makes us truly human.

Thank you, @TrishB! 😘😘😘

Not only an addition to the #YellowNFShelf, but also a book about my greatest fear. I suppose it's not only my greatest fear. Looking forward to reading it. 😘
Also appreciate that both books have 'seeing' as a common theme. 😉 Cassandra has been on my TBR for a while. 😁

This is a brilliant book by Oliver Sacks, a renowned Neurologist, which explores the world of 'Vision' through the experiences of several Visually impaired people. This book tells you how sensation and perception are different in so many levels. How blind people live in a 'Visual world' using their Mind's eye, how lack or sudden gain in stereovision change your daily life, how people with face-blindness mistake common faces other objects!

The Mind's Eye | Oliver Sacks
Pickpick

5/5

I'm obsessively (re)reading Oliver Sacks' books and articles. His warmth and compassion shine in this volume; his recollections made especially intimate by the inclusion of his own experience with melanoma and vision loss.
