The New York Times and internationally bestselling author of the captivating, richly drawn (Womans World) The Paris Library returns with a brilliant new novel based on the true story of Jessie Carsonthe American librarian who changed the literary landscape of France. 1918: As the Great War rages, Jessie Carson takes a leave of absence from the New York Public Library to work for the American Committee for Devastated France. Founded by millionaire Anne Morgan, this group of international women help rebuild devastated French communities just miles from the front. Upon arrival, Jessie strives to establish something that the French have never seenchildrens libraries. She turns ambulances into bookmobiles and trains the first French female librarians. Then she disappears. 1987: When NYPL librarian and aspiring writer Wendy Peterson stumbles across a passing reference to Jessie Carson in the archives, she becomes consumed with learning her fate. In her obsessive research, she discovers that she and the elusive librarian have more in common than their work at New Yorks famed library, but she has no idea their paths will converge in surprising ways across time.

Band of Sisters, while it is historical fiction,is based on an archive of letters & journals the author discovered,by Unit members, housed at Smith College. These enterprising young women joined what became known as the Smith Unit. They traveled to the WWI French lines to offer food, basic healthcare, cows for milk & chickens for eggs, rebuilding of villages, plows for farming, schools for children. In doing so, they forged intimate relationships ⬇️

My hygge hour tonight. A book, my kitties, tea & cinnamon sugar toast. On my cozy loveseat with multiple pillows & a blanket. Em & Poe curled up together in our bed earlier today, then Em who jumped into my dresser drawer full of fleece pjs. All signs it is getting a little colder. 🐾🐾📘🫖🍞

This is based on a group of real American women who helped in France during and after WWI. The group (known as CARD) was something I had never heard about, and the knowledge I gain is why I love historical fiction. The story was entertaining and had both drama and humor. While I would have liked to have a more emotional connection to the characters, I still really enjoyed the book. Thanks to Edelweiss+ and the publisher for the digital ARC. 4/5!

“My mother maintained that the “seek and ye shall find” passage of Matthew 7:7 referred to reading, that most answers could be found in books.”

Beautifully done HF dual timeline 1918/1987: NYPL librarian Jesse Carson volunteers to go abroad to help conserve the ‘literary landscape‘ of France WWI. This was part of wealthy socialite Anne Morgan‘s program to rebuild communities close to the war front.

A fascinating and satisfying read based on the true story of a group of American women who worked in France during WWI to ease the suffering of the French people. Told as a dual timeline story, I thought at first that the contemporary story was weak, but changed my mind as the plots drew together. The author also provides extensive information on the historical characters. Definitely worth reading.

Ngl, I thought the Wendy chapters were weaker than Jessie's, but that might just be my investment in the Cards talking. I had no idea this committee existed and now I would die for them. What interesting women, both the Cards and the French they served! #historicalfiction

I really enjoyed the newest book from the author of “The Paris Library”. I love books that teach me something I didn‘t know existed and the CARDs (Le Comité américain pour Les régions dévastées) checked that box ✅ Told in dual timelines (1918 & 1987), you get an excellent sense of what Jessie Carson went through in France in 1918 in her words and what Wendy Peterson discovers at the NYPL in 1987. Pub date is 4/30/24, don‘t miss it!
