Face It: A Memoir
Face It: A Memoir | Debbie Harry
21 posts | 15 read | 15 to read
Filled with never-before-seen photos and art throughout, the much-anticipated autobiography from rock icon and lead singer of Blondie, Debbie HarryBRAVE, BEAUTIFUL AND BORN TO BE PUNK Musician, actor, activist, and the iconic face of New York City cool, Debbie Harry is the frontwoman of Blondie, a band that forged a new sound that brought together the worlds of rock, punk, disco, reggae and hip-hop to create some of the most beloved pop songs of all time. As a muse, she collaborated with some of the boldest artists of the past four decades. The scope of Debbie Harry's impact on our culture has been matched only by her reticence to reveal her rich inner life--until now. In an arresting mix of visceral, soulful storytelling and stunning visuals, Face It upends the standard music memoir while delivering a truly prismatic portrait. With all the grit, grime, and glory recounted in intimate detail, Face It re-creates the downtown scene of 1970s New York City, where Blondie played alongside the Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Aesthetically dazzling, and including never-before-seen photographs, bespoke illustrations and fan art installations, Face It brings Debbie Harry's world and artistic sensibilities to life. Following her path from glorious commercial success to heroin addiction, the near-death of partner Chris Stein, a heart-wrenching bankruptcy, and Blondie's breakup as a band to her multifaceted acting career in more than thirty films, a stunning solo career and the triumphant return of her band, and her tireless advocacy for the environment and LGBTQ rights, Face It is a cinematic story of a woman who made her own path, and set the standard for a generation of artists who followed in her footsteps--a memoir as dynamic as its subject. "I was saying things in songs that female singers didn't really say back then. I wasn't submissive or begging him to come back, I was kicking his ass, kicking him out, kicking my own ass too. My Blondie character was an inflatable doll but with a dark, provocative, aggressive side. I was playing it up yet I was very serious."--From Face It

One theory is that #FaceTheMusic originated from theatre, where performers had to literally face the music (the orchestra positioned in front of the stage, in this case) and overcome stage fright.

SamAnne How is the memoir? I‘m tempted. 3y
Cazxxx I don‘t think I could give an unbiased opinion as I‘m a super fan. For me I think it‘s great as I‘m so interested in her life and learned a lot of things I didn‘t know. If you‘re a fan I think you‘ll find it interesting! 3y

I‘ve been obsessed with blondie and Debbie Harry since I was a child after hearing them on the radio. I‘ve been waiting for the library to have the audiobook in and finally it‘s arrived. Although I have the hard copy I want to hear Debbie telling her story, it always gives the book more character in my opinion 😻

I‘m stumped 🤔 Im sure Debbie Harry aka Blondie, has an exciting story to tell, yet her memoir ( especially her delivery) was SO BLAND! Even when sharing scandalous bits, she lacks all emotions. I‘m not sure if she‘s truly too cool for school and nothing fazes her, or maybe she‘s just not a natural storyteller. I was hoping, waiting expecting MORE. 😕I did enjoy the musical trip down memory lane & got lost on YouTube watching old Blondie videos💕

TrishB I think she‘s definitely just too cool. 😁 4y
Cinfhen Yeah @TrishB I think she invented the Zero F %cks attitude 4y
TheEllieMo She was at the Cheltenham Literature Festival last year, and apparently a lot of people walked out of the event halfway through because it was really bad. I am not convinced she was wholly engaged with the idea of this project 4y

Cinfhen Interesting @TheEllieMo !!!! She just seemed so disengaged with her own life story 4y
Freespirit Her talent lies in singing not writing maybe! I thought she was beautiful though😍 4y
CarolynM I'm with @TrishB Whenever I've seen Debbie, whether it's in videos for songs, on chat shows or in documentaries, she always had that air of detachment. Either it's just how she is or it's a very well cultivated pose. 4y
Cinfhen Agreed @Freespirit she really is quite beautiful and she knows it😂‼️She discusses using her looks to her advantage in the memoir/ she does seem to ALWAYS convey that nothing can shock me persona @CarolynM 4y

Here is my winter 6 clockwise from Debbie ; cover love, hat on cover, read in a day, Hollywood, live and learn, and millennial. Definitely a good reading season and i think i have just started spring ( can anyone confirm what pan asian covers?) so should be able to post the first book of that most positive of seasons tomorrow (fingers crossed).

I dusted off my copy of parallel lines fir my schoolboy cover crush + a fascinating story of sex, drugs & rock and roll. Some stories are shocking and told with a detached voice which add to the impact, this is a woman who is an iconic image but an individual who survives celebratory and being treated as little more than a face when she is so much more. Well worth reading ⏬

andrew61 And if i had a time machine what wouldn't i give to go to CBGB's in the 70's. 5y
LeahBergen That album cover flashes me back! ❤️ 5y
andrew61 @LeahBergen yes i probably bought it in woolworths for a ridiculously small sum back in the 70's, but just had to ask my daughter if i could borrow it back from her for this photo! ☺ 5y

So often I forget the back cover of books has such great words. This book is beautiful. From the writing to the actual structure of the physical book, it‘s incredible. 💕

I‘ve been a fan of Debbie Harry since the 70‘s and was excited to hear her narrate this book. Her love of New York shines throughout her memoir, but otherwise it was so-so. I expected her to tell her story, but she just reads it. Many of her stories revolve around clothing. Overall, it felt impersonal.

I‘m a huge fan of the 70‘s New York punk scene and Debbie Harry. I was so excited to read this! I loved her stories about New York and the music scene. But I wish she would have been more detailed in some of her stories, like her break up with Chris Stein. She just sort of glazed over it. Overall I really enjoyed this book.

If Debbie felt like this, there‘s no chance for us mere mortals is there.

Cathythoughts No , there‘s no chance at all 🙄 5y
squirrelbrain Not at all! 😧 5y
Bookwomble There's more money to be made from causing people to feel insecure, and then selling them the 'solution', than there is from encouraging and supporting people to be self-caring and self-acceptant, sadly. 5y

TrishB @Bookwomble bedrock of capitalism. Because if we all felt good where would consumerism be. 5y
Chrissyreadit Absolutely! 5y
Chrissyreadit @TrishB yes! I struggle with feminism (heartily pro) and capitalism (I like true enterprising opportunities for all) and raising my teens to believe they have choices rather than influences. 5y
emilyhaldi She‘s not wrong 5y
TrishB @Chrissyreadit totally agree- nothing wrong with liking perfume, make up, nice clothes etc - it‘s when you think it‘s going to change your life if you buy it! Or you have to have it to be acceptable. 5y
KB253 I agree with her, so I put it down 5y
TrishB Thanks @Reggie I don‘t know the person- but loved her rant (I have similar to friends and family!!). Society‘s way to make us feel like this is powerful and hidden and we must fight back. 5y

I really wasn't a fan of Blondie but I enjoyed the music when it came on.
I really enjoyed this.
It almost felt like Debbie was telling you her story.
I liked the fanart, it was a nice change
