The Other Valley
The Other Valley: A Novel | Scott Alexander Howard
For fans of David Mitchell, Ruth Ozeki, and Kazuo Ishiguro, an elegant and exhilarating literary speculative novel about an isolated town neighbored by its own past and future, and a young girl who spots two elderly visitors from across the border: the grieving parents of the boy she loves. Sixteen-year-old Odile is an awkward, quiet girl vying for a coveted seat on the Conseil. If she earns the position, shell decide who may cross her towns heavily guarded borders. On the other side, its the same valley, the same town. Except to the east, the town is twenty years ahead in time. To the west, its twenty years behind. The towns repeat in an endless sequence across the wilderness. When Odile recognizes two visitors she wasnt supposed to see, she realizes that the parents of her friend Edme have been escorted across the border from the future, on a mourning tour, to view their son while hes still alive in Odiles present. Edmewho is brilliant, funny, and the only person to truly see Odileis about to die. Sworn to secrecy in order to preserve the timeline, Odile now becomes the Conseils top candidate. Yet she finds herself drawing closer to the doomed boy, imperiling her entire future. A breathlessly moving unique take on the intersection of fate and free will (Nikki Erlick, author of The Measure), The Other Valley is a stellar debut, full of heartbreak and hope wrapped up in gorgeous prose (Christina Dalcher, author of Vox).

Odile is going through the vetting process to become a member of the Conseil, who decide whether people can travel out of their valley to other valleys beyond. This is speculative fiction, so the other valleys are twenty years ahead or twenty years behind.

I liked this, although I‘m glad I listened on audio, as many readers complained about the lack of “” in print.

I‘m also not sure if there were huge plot holes or if I‘m just a bit daft! 🤪

It is an interesting premise, and overall, the story was compelling, but it felt slow, and I feel like it was missing depth to the characters. A soft pick.

Odile‘s town is in a valley with the same town 20 years ago in the next valley and 20 years in the future in the other direction. Travel between the town is strictly controlled. This is a fascinating premise and a completely absorbing listen, but there‘s a huge plot hole that‘s impossible to ignore. Between pick and so-so.

This story was quite original and a times a tad confusing, but I really enjoyed it. I found it to be both sad and incredibly thought provoking. The author has created this interesting world where the valley to either side holds the same world 20 years earlier or later. Managing such a society, where someone can change the present if they were allowed to go back, results in a complex set of morality issues. This story will stay with me. 4/5 stars!

Odile lives in an unnamed valley close to a lake. East of the valley is the exact same valley, just 20 years in the future. West of the lake is 20 years in the past. Citizens can petition to visit the valley to the East or West under special circumstances and after consideration and under strict security conditions by the Conceil.
Odile notices such visitors one day after school and identifies who they are, and by that... ⬇️

julesG ... that her friend from school will die.

Speculative Fiction about time's progress and whether we should or even can interfere with it.

What made me put this down over and over again was that there are no punctuation marks or indentations that indicate dialogue. I know this is a current trend, but it's annoying when you have to track back half a paragraph because you did not notice there was dialogue until the end of it.

Lindy I just picked up my library hold but haven‘t started reading it yet. I checked just now to see the dialogue style in the Canadian edition and it‘s without dialogue marks. In general, I don‘t mind, although it depends on the author‘s skill. I find the absence tends to contribute to my immersion in the story rather than detracting from it. 9mo
julesG @Lindy It might be easier when you read the finished novel. The eARC had strange line breaks and that made the missing dialogue "landmarks" even more of a nuisance. 9mo
Lindy @julesG Yes, digital ARCs can be rough 9mo

Perhaps because Part 1 of this book read as YA, it gave me The Giver vibes. I liked the premise with adjoining valleys living the same lives separated by 20 years from the valleys east and west. Part 2 jumps twenty years which was intriguing my issue was the story didn‘t didn‘t have the tension needed to make the premise unforgettable.

jlhammar I added this to my #BOTM box. I‘ll have to lower my expectations a bit. 10mo
marleed @jlhammar oh I hope you like it. I think my problem was likening it to The Giver and expecting some sort of epic moral dilemma. 10mo

An isolated town is neighbored by its past to the West and its future to the East. The Conseil regulates travel between towns, giving few the chance to see lost loved ones. Odile‘s life changes forever when she glimpses a friend‘s parents, visiting from the future. While the premise is strong and the ideas about fate and free will interesting, I was disappointed that grief is utterly misunderstood here and frustrated at the lost opportunity.
