Ode to a Nobody
Ode to a Nobody | Caroline Brooks DuBois

A devastating tornado tears apart more than just houses in this striking novel in verse about a girl rebuilding herself. Before the storm, thirteen-year-old Quinn was happy flying under the radar. She was average. Unremarkable. Always looking for an escape from her house, where her bickering parents fawned over her genius big brother. Inside our broken home / we didnt know how broken / the world outside was. But after the storm, Quinn cant seem to go back to average. Her friends weren't affected by the tornado in the same way. To them, the storm left behind a playground of abandoned houses and distracted adults. As Quinn struggles to find stability in the tornados aftermath, she must choose: between homes, friendships, and versions of herself. Nothing that was mine / yesterday is mine today. Told in rich, spectacular verse, Caroline Brooks DuBois crafts a powerful story of redemption as Quinn makes her way from Before to After. Theres nothing average about the world Quinn wakes up to after the storm; maybe theres nothing average about her, either. This emotional coming-of-age journey for middle grade readers proves that its never too late to be the person you want to be.

This was a wonderful read. Quinn(ie) is an eighth grader trying to figure out exactly who she is. Her seemingly perfect brother just left for college, and now her parents are fighting more than ever. She‘s been friends with Jack for years, but things change after Jade joins their class. Then her home is hit by a tornado. As she learns to write poetry, she works through all of these things and grows in her own direction.

Daisey This #MiddleGrade #NovelInVerse is a Truman nominee for Missouri this school year that I will absolutely be recommending to my students.

I‘ve slowly read some not so great books recently, so I picked this up for a quick read. It reminds me a bit of Love that Dog in the way it‘s written as Quinn is learning about and writing poetry, as well as dealing with some tough aspects of life. Her parents‘ relationship is rocky and her neighborhood is hit by a tornado. I‘m enjoying it and really liked this bit about personification.

My aunt gifted my class library the Missouri Truman Award Nominees for next school year! I spent some time this morning getting them labeled to put on the shelves. I‘m taking the tagged home to hopefully read soon.
