Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
Yumi and the Nightmare Painter: A Cosmere Novel | Brandon Sanderson
12 posts | 13 read | 5 to read
#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson adds to his Cosmere universe shared by Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive with a new standalone novel especially for fans of Asian pop culture. Illustrated by Aliya Chen. Yumi comes from a land of gardens, meditation, and spirits, while Painter lives in a world of darkness, technology, and nightmares. When their lives suddenly become intertwined in strange ways, can they put aside their differences and work together to uncover the mysteries of their situation and save each others communities from certain disaster? Note from Brandon: For years Ive wanted to write a fantasy novel focused on people working in jobs that are normal to them, but fantastical to us as readers. Added to that, my wife has encouraged me to feature more romance in my stories. When I threw two people together whose jobs seem fantastical to each other, the tale of Yumi and the Nightmare Painter was the result. This novel in particular feels like a special gift to my wifeone were both pleased that you now get to share.

Brandon Sanderson is an author that will continue to surprise me. The world building in this book was so incredibly well done that I cannot stop thinking about it and picturing it from every angle in my brain. I want to go visit Design's noodle shop, just once, and peer out on the hion lines while eavesdropping on the painters. Ugh, I loved this so so much. 💙💖

3✨This is the third secret project from Sanderson. Two very different individuals from different worlds need to work together to protect their two worlds. They basically share a physical body while the other is tethered to them. It‘s a very interesting story and naturally the world building was amazing, but I still get lost in the creative mastery that he always provides his reader. #SeriesLove @TheSpineView @Andrew65

Loved this one! The settings are so much fun and I enjoyed the characters and their unconventional interactions. I do think it‘s best if you‘ve at least read some other Cosmere books - while the story absolutely still works, some of the narration won‘t make sense otherwise.

I‘m culinarily impressionable. One of the title characters in YUMI AND THE NIGHTMARE PAINTER ate noodles, so I had to make my favourite Hong Kong style soy sauce noodles with a poached egg and a generous glop of chili oil.

It took me a little while to sink into the book, but I‘m feeling it now. Hopefully I‘ll get lots of time with it when I puppysit tonight, in between games of fetch.

#ScarathlonPhotoChallenge #Day28 #Nightmare Bit late, but I‘ve been cramming in last minute reading & completely forgot. Then I couldn‘t find a “nightmare” book on my shelf. So I improvised with a Cosmere book. #Scarathlon #SpookyGhostClub 6pts

Third of the Sanderson secret projects.

A romance, Sanderson/Cosmere style. Not my cup of tea.

It was mid & that alone disappointed me the most!

I didn‘t like Yumi. At all.

Snarky painter ♥️

40% was a slow boring slog with a highly annoying female character. Repetitive. Formulaic. I saw the ending in the first chapter & didn‘t enjoy getting there.

They do grow & change eventually so I think I might like a 2nd book!

Disclaimer: I‘m not a Cosmere fan. I read WoK but had no urge to continue.

The narration was excellent.

This new Cosmere novel, one of the secret projects, is a very unique fantasy story with a very cool magic system. Very simply explained, it is the concept that art gives you to ability to manipulate spirits. I don‘t want to go much more detailed as that would spoil the experience. The book has beautiful artwork, which is perfect to go along with the story and the audiobook is wonderful. What brings me down a star is the immature humor.⬇️

Nessavamusic This is a common criticism of Sanderson, it just doesn‘t fit this book as well. It makes this seem more like a YA book, which it could be - there is nothing questionable for a younger audience. I do still recommend, especially if you have read the other Cosmere books. 4⭐️ 1y

Wow. WOW! The third of Brandon Sanderson's secret project books arrived today - the special Kickstarter edition! I have to say that I think this one is the prettiest one yet! And it's almost 500 pages! I'm in love! The most exciting thing however, is that the pin that came with the box is Shallan! She's one of my favorite characters from his Stormlight Archive series! 🥰💕📚
