Maigret and the Killer
Maigret and the Killer | Georges Simenon
7 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Maigret, accompanying his physician on an emergency call, is drawn into one of his most stubborn cases yet. The victim, a son of a wealthy perfume manufacturer, had been enjoying an odd hobby before his death: collecting human voices with a tape recorder, often in the rougher districts of Paris. But his wallet and his tape recorder have been left untouched, so the killer's motive is unclear. The absence of clues begins to exasperate Maigret until an anonymous letter reveals that he is dealing with no ordinary criminal. Maigret is a registered trademark of the Estate of Georges Simenon.

Pickpick

This detective story featuring Maigret, has a slow & steady rhythm. His writing style is spare but effective. The murdered victim tracks the “sounds”of life on a cassette recorder he wears visibly around his neck. What evidence might be in those tapes? Red herrings take Maigret on one path involving house break-ins-might thse men be connected to the murder? But when Maigret strategically uses the newspapers to draw the perpetrator out 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 the investigation takes a surprising turn. #policeprocedural #serieslove2024 (edited) 6mo

Pickpick

Maigret is close to retirement, though the authorities have just raised retirement age for police inspectors by five years, so he's got some way to go yet. Simenon deftly paints an impression of a man ready to lay down the burden of long responsibility, and who will likely be lost without that lifetime purpose.
Following what the papers report as a frenzied knife attack by a lunatic, Maigret is pressured by the Examining Magistrate to bring in ⬇️

Bookwomble ... the "psychopath" as soon as possible. Maigret eschews these gross oversimplifications of character, taking chances on his intuition to understand the personality of the man he needs to bring before what passes for justice. While Maigret is never conflicted in his duty, his compassion for victim and perpetrator set him apart from those around him as much as the killer's crime sets him apart from society. 5⭐ 1y
The_Book_Ninja Who do you love the most. Maigret or Sherlock? 1y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja I've known Holmes as long as I can remember. Although I recall my Nana sending me to the library for Maigret books when I was 7, I only recently found him myself. So Holmes is more wrapped up in my psyche & is archetypal, whereas Maigret is more recent, human and humane. I'd be fascinated meeting Holmes, I'd be moved meeting Maigret. If accused of a crime, whether I was innocent or not, I'd rather have Maigret investigating. 1y

The_Book_Ninja I‘ve never read a Maigret but I do love Holmes. I read so much Holmes when I was a kid, contemporary detective novels I read later seemed a bit too simplistic to me 1y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja I do love Holmes, too, and I felt slightly guilty preferring to have Maigret investigate my case 😳 I'm also currently reading an annotated edition of all the Holmes stories, and the question is kind of like being asked if I'd rather have chocolate ice cream or lemon sorbet - just depends on the day and my mood 🍨🤷🏻‍♂️🍋😁 1y
bibliothecarivs Great question, @The_Book_Ninja, and great answers, @Bookwomble :) 1y
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble that‘s totally relatable. One last question: Holmes has his pipe, his violin and his “transcendental stimulation”. What fun hobbies does your man Maigret have? 1y
The_Book_Ninja @bibliothecarivs thanks. Bookwomble is my brother from another mother 1y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Pipe smoking, again, alcohol, not excessive but somewhat more than his doctor is happy with, and good food of the homely kind. A favourite dish seems to be a traditional French sausage called Andouillette, which sounds disgusting to me! 1y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Aww! 😀🫂🤗 1y

"A man who kills cuts himself off in a sense from the human community. In the blink of an eye, he stops being an individual like the rest...Even real killers, professionals. Their manner is aggressive, sarcastic; it's because they need to show off, to make themselves believe they can still exist as men."

"She poured some rum into a glass, added some sugar, left in the spoon so that the glass didn't shatter and added boiling water.
- A slice of lemon?
- No."

Well I haven't earned my hot rum by attending a murder scene in the pouring rain, but it seemed rude not to join Maigret in a bracing drink. Cheers ?

"For the first time since they had been going for dinner with the Pardons once a month, Maigret had a memory of the evening at Boulevard Voltaire that was almost painful."

This one is near the end of the Maigret series (70/75), so it will be interesting to see if Simenon shows any signs of him ageing.
