The Dead Lands: A Novel | Benjamin Percy
11 posts | 14 read | 22 to read
A MINNESOTA BOOK AWARDS FINALIST IN NOVEL & SHORT STORY In Benjamin Percy's new thriller, a post-apocalyptic reimagining of the Lewis and Clark saga, a super flu and nuclear fallout have made a husk of the world we know. A few humans carry on, living in outposts such as the Sanctuary-the remains of St. Louis-a shielded community that owes its survival to its militant defense and fear-mongering leaders. Then a rider comes from the wasteland beyond its walls. She reports on the outside world: west of the Cascades, rain falls, crops grow, civilization thrives. But there is danger too: the rising power of an army that pillages and enslaves every community they happen upon. Against the wishes of the Sanctuary, a small group sets out in secrecy. Led by Lewis Meriwether and Mina Clark, they hope to expand their infant nation, and to reunite the States. But the Sanctuary will not allow them to escape without a fight.

I typically like both post-apocalyptic stories and Ben Percy, but this one is a miss for me. It tries to incorporate too many things and is thus too fragmented. Plus the effort to push a Lewis and Clark narrative into this doesn‘t work. Disappointing.

FlowerFairy Your blanket is beautiful! Did you make it? 3y
Hooked_on_books @FlowerFairy Thanks! I didn‘t, but my mother-in-law did! I shall pass along your compliment. She‘ll be delighted! 3y

This grim, gripping post-apocalyptic tale will definitely appeal to fans of The Stand by Stephen King or The Passage by Justin Cronin. I'm not entirely sure why the author chose to name the characters after Lewis, Clark etc while using their epic journey as the backbone for the story. That may have been more distracting than enlightening in the end. Also, don't get too attached to the characters--Percy is pretty merciless.

vivastory If you ever get a chance to hear him read, I definitely recommend it. He has an unbelievably deep voice 5y
vivastory Also, the following book is great fun & I think a sort of manifesto in defense of genre lit (it does contain some spoilers though) 5y
Decalino Thrill Me sounds really interesting! Thanks for the tip! 5y

I just spent a week at Disney World with three kids under age ten, so....not much time for reading😜. Did manage to start this one. I've never read this author but am intrigued so far.

LauraBrook You're a brave little soldier! Hope you get some quiet, feet-up reading time today! 8y

I keep thinking "Oregon Trail" while reading this post apocalyptic Lewis and Clark retelling and while you're not likely to die of dysentery, mutant bats or spiders might rip your face off.

2 thumbs up! Loved it! The end tied up really quick, quicker than I expected, but instead of feeling like it was just to be done, it was super satisfying. This is ripe for a sequel and I hope it happens!

Another post-apocalyptic story, but this is one worth reading. Two characters, Lewis Meriwether and Mina Clark, set out from Sanctuary (St. Louis) with their guide Gawea to find hope out West. Great characters, action, and a unique retelling of the Lewis and Clark journey make this an entertaining read.

Post-apocalyptic tail of survival. How does society survive? What does exploration look like makes an interesting premise? The story starts off promising enough, but rapidly becomes somewhat cliché driven. It was fine but it wouldn't be my first recommendation.
