Tomb Sweeping: Stories | Alexandra Chang
13 posts | 11 read | 10 to read
A playful and deeply affective short story collection about the histories, technologies, and generational divides that shape our relationshipsfrom the award-winning writer of Days of Distraction Compelling and perceptive, Tomb Sweeping probes the loyalties we hold: to relatives, to strangers, and to ourselves. In stories set across the US and Asia, Alexandra Chang immerses us in the lives of immigrant families, grocery store employees, expecting parents, and guileless lab assistants. A woman known only to her neighbors as the Asian recycling lady collects bottles from the streets she calls home. A young college grad ponders the void left from a broken friendship. An unfulfilled housewife in Shanghai finds a secret outlet for her ambitions in an undercover gambling den. Two strangers become something more through the bond of mistaken identity. These characters, adeptly attuned to the mystery of living, invite us to consider whether it is possible for anyone to entirely do right by another. Tomb Sweeping brims with remarkable skill and talent in every story, keeping a definitive pulse on loss, community, and what it means to feel fully alive. With her debut story collection, Chang further establishes herself as a writer to watch (New York Times Book Review).

Mehso-so

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just a so-so, I enjoyed some of the stories in this collection more than others but wasn‘t blown away by any of them.

The first one felt so anticlimactic to me, I don‘t think I understood it at all.

Oh well, on to better things or at least something new!

Bonus: Hazel in the background. #catsoflitsy

Starting this!

Happy world book day!

When I was living in the UK, we had World Book Night which is the first Thursday in March (they moved the date because it conflicts with school holidays).

You used to apply to give away the selected books. You‘d find people who don‘t read often or at all and give them a book (provided to you for free). I think now bookstores and libraries give them away.

It was great! I wish we had something similar here.

Ruthiella They did do it for at least one year in the US because I snagged a copy of Patty Smith‘s “Just Kids” from it. This would have been in maybe 2014 or so? But it was ultimately discontinued I guess. 7mo
Kitta @Ruthiella Oh cool, that‘s before I moved to the US so I guess I missed it. I remember when that was a choice! I‘m sad they don‘t do the free books here anymore. But I guess I‘m not their target market - they‘re trying to get more people to read and I already do. It was a great way to meet people as a giver of the books. One year I gave out like 50 copies of (edited) 7mo
Kitta @Ruthiella which was weird because I read it and didn‘t like it, but I see the appeal for others lol. I didn‘t get to choose which book I was giving out. But I was happy to give them to those interested in it. Maybe it‘s just me but everyone else seems to love it 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 7mo

4⭐️ A great selection of short stories. Several are stylistically fresh and unique. For example, Li Fan is a 3-pg story about a woman‘s life beginning with her death. Well written and compelling.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve been dipping in and out of this collection of slice-of-life short stories all month. It was honestly slow going, but I loved a few. The real standouts are “Li Fan,”cleverly told in reverse, and “Persona Development” which toys with monitoring the elderly as we do infants. Chang writes thoughtful stories, but some didn‘t quite hold my attention. Narrowly a pick. #BOTM

JuniperWilde I‘ve just started this one. 10mo

It‘s taking me forever to get through this collection. Grabbing a story or two while my 11 year old works on his Lego typewriter. A wild Friday night! 🙂

Leftcoastzen Ohhhh , you have the typewriter! I want it! 10mo
britt_brooke @Leftcoastzen My son got it for his birthday! It‘s an amazing set. 10mo

If I were in a writing workshop reading short stories and voting which should be further developed into novels, this author wins the day. She has great concepts and writing with interesting characters, but there were 15 short stories in this collection and many just come to an abrupt ending as though I DNF'd good story after good story.

catiewithac I just finished the first story and can already tell that she‘s a master! 10mo

Unfortunately I was a bit under the weather over the holidays and have fallen behind on posting and checking litsy, but feeling a bit better today! 👍🏻

I enjoyed this short story collection featuring Chinese and Chinese-American women often in the context of academia. She does a great job at expressing the push and pull of expectations on them and how it might lead to unexpected outcomes. #botm

britt_brooke @Megabooks BOTM roped me back in with a great deal recently. I‘m not convinced subscription boxes are for me, but I‘m gonna give it a fair chance. Last time, I canceled pretty quickly, but that was back when Liberty was still there, so a while ago! 12mo
