The Tiger's Wife meets The History of Love in this inventive, lushly imagined debut novel that explores the intersections of family secrets, Jewish myths, the legacy of war and history, and the bonds between sistersWhen Eli Burke dies, he leaves behind a mysterious notebook full of stories about a miracle worker named the White Rebbe and the enigmatic Angel of Losses, both protectors of things gone astray and guardians of the lost letter of the alphabet, which completes the secret name of God. Years later, when Eli's granddaughter Marjorie stumbles upon his notebook, everything she thought she knew about her grandfatherand her familycomes undone. To learn the truth about Eli's origins and unlock the secrets he kept, Marjorie embarks on an odyssey that takes her deep into the past, from the medieval Holy Land to eighteenth-century Venice and Nazi-occupied Lithuania. What she finds leads her back to present-day New York City and her estranged sister, Holly, whom she must save from the consequences of Eli's past. Interweaving history, theology, and both real and imagined Jewish folktales, The Angel of Losses is a family story of what lasts, and of what we canand cannotescape.

#WishesandBlessings

I thought of this book for the #Angels prompt that I read for a book tour back in 2014. I said “A book to sink deeply into if you like folklore, religion, cultural heritage and family dramas.” Also worth sinking into, a plate of Ruth Reichl‘s Matzo Brei that I made to accompany the book.
A link to my review & recipe is below.

3.5 ⭐️
A Bingo/Make Me Read it pick by @Cinfhen

I loved a lot about this: the tale of two sisters; the grandfather‘s secret life; the cultural differences brought by Holly/Chava‘s marriage; the folk tales the grandfather told them; and the stories Marjorie uncovered in her studies.
But I have to downgrade it because the author loses the thread - by the end you can‘t tell which Angel is which, and the timeline get muddled.
Still a pick 🙌🏻

Cinfhen Really?? I choose this!?? It sounds great!!! I‘m glad it was a pick 😁 5y
Sweettartlaura @Cinfhen you chose a random number - it corresponded to this - and it was great 💁🏻‍♀️. I badly needed to get out of a bad slump. And meet my Mount TBR goal. This did both . So thanks for playing 😉 5y
Cinfhen Ha!!! Im so glad 😁💕💕and happy the slump has ended 5y

I enjoyed this book immensely. I don't know much about the Jewish culture, but I loved the folklore this story used. I will be picking up another book about the Jewish culture.

Book club was a roaring success! Lots of great discussion, full table, dessert for dinner.

BookishFeminist Looks delicious! Mine meets in a library so we don't have such decadent desserts 🍰 8y
razmanda @BookishFeminist we meet in a different restaurant every time! Shockingly, our numbers skyrocketed once there were carbs and booze available. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @razmanda 😂😂 things that don't surprise me. Maybe I'll have to suggest this to our group leader--the one time we met at a restaurant there were twice the people. 😭 8y

razmanda @BookishFeminist we also try to pick a place that matches the theme of the book. Example: Book takes place in the Middle East -- Al Amir. Book written by Italian author -- Nonna's. 8y
bookwrm526 I really need to get in on this!! 8y
Bookish_B My book club is called "Books & Booze Club" and we also always meet at a different restaurant and there is always alcohol involved ? That chocolate cake is calling my name though ? 8y
MrBook Cool pictures! Which town, perchance, does your Club meet? 8y
razmanda @MrBook Columbia, SC 8y
MrBook Ah, love SC. @BookBabe and I belong to a bookclub of the same title in NYC, lol. Is this a franchise? 🤔 😉👍🏻 8y

Excellent read! Jewish mysticism, family folklore, a mystery to uncover. Really lovely. But now I have to wait two weeks until book club to discuss it. GAH.

bookwrm526 Ack, I don't think it could possibly get worse!! Do you have room for the kindle app on your phone?? 8y
razmanda @bookwrm526 thankfully, yes! I'm reading on my phone at lunch and want to tell people I'm not just playing on Facebook! They need to know I'm reading! 8y
bookwrm526 @razmanda I hate that, like when I go out to eat by myself and I'm reading a book and the waitstaff keeps checking on me because I'm lonely. I just want to tell them I'm reading, I'm happy, go away!!! 8y
BookishFeminist Oo I hate that! Especially since I don't charge my kindle too often since it has such a long battery life, so I'm always not realizing it's running low. 8y
razmanda @bookwrm526 exactly! I don't want to talk to you, random lady. I'm busy! 8y
