This was pretty good. Definitely a page turner. I liked the story. I don‘t feel like there were too many shocking twists, but it was a really well thought out story, nonetheless. I liked the characters and the theme of very strong women throughout the book. Definitely worthwhile to pick up and one of my favorite authors.
I loved how this thriller had a different dynamic than most, focusing on the mother/daughter relationship where the reader learns about the truth before the characters do. Each chapter is short, alternating perspectives between the mom and daughter. It kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to understand the full story. Pekkanen also did a great job with character development so you care about both Ruth and Catherine throughout.
Reading this mother-daughter thriller while visiting my parents‘ and loving their new screen room and view! Truly heaven!
This started out good and with potential. Unfortunately, it failed for me. It became incredibly predictable and you could see the twisted coming like a freight train.
There were some ridiculous occurrences that just weren‘t plausible and that made the whole story crumble.
1 ⭐️ the author tried. I would not recommend this book at all.
July 6, 2024 The ending was happy and sad at the same time. I think that Sarah Pekkanen is an excellent thriller author and that she keeps the suspense going. She writes in a certain way where it is not giving away what will happen next. Im glad the events that happened at the end happened. James was a murderer. He was going to kill Ava but Catherine stops him by killong him herself with two large does of insulin. Basically, James dies
July 5, 2024 Reached page 208 and things are beginning to get intense between Catherine and Ruth. Catherine suspects that Ruth is lying to her and has been investigating her without her knowing. Ruth Sterling is not her real name. She use to be known as Ava Morales and Catherine is scared of her "mom". When her Mom leaves, she leaves after her and texts her mom to not call or text. She doesn't even have her location turn on...
July 1, 2024 Happy Monday or Happy 1st of July! What better way to start the month than reading a book in the hot weather, right? I am on page 112 and OMG am I reaching the climax. I am almost halfway through the book and Catherine suspects that her mom Ruth is not diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She found some evidence at her home that suggests nothing is wrong with her mom. That perhaps her mom faking and doing things as if she has Alzheimer's.
“…didn‘t know it was possible to be so deeply angry with someone and simultaneously love them so much that you wanted to hug them until it hurt you both.” 😳

Another great book from Sarah Pekkanen. It‘s a twisty turny mystery/thriller that tells a story in which people aren‘t always who they represent themselves as. There‘s a bit of a surprise ending that I didn‘t see coming. The only thing I would change would be to have two narrators for the two people. It says who‘s speaking but when the voice is the same, it‘s a bit confusing.
“When Ruth Sterling was a teenager, she left one night to escape an abusive home and a troubling boyfriend. Pregnant, alone, and prepared to do anything to survive, she makes a life for herself & her newborn daughter Catherine. For more than 20 years, Ruth has lived quietly and has provided for her daughter. But she is always ready to run at a moment‘s notice, and never allows either of them to put down roots too deeply..but for what reasons?”
Really enjoyed this trip through the secret life of Ruth Sterling, a single Mom to Catherine. The distance she goes to cover up the past and maintain absolute control had me turning the pages. Enjoyed it!!!
📖🖤My first start of November. You know it‘s good when you read at the pump 🤣🤣 Carrie, it‘s got all its claws dug in!!!
10-19-23: My 91st finished book of 2023! Catherine and her mother Ruth are close until one day Catherine starts to suspect her mom is not being 100% truthful. With some flashbacks to when Ruth was younger, this book takes some dark turns telling the story of Ruth‘s past and her and Catherine‘s present situation. And then there is James. Ruth‘s high school boyfriend. We learn a lot about him in flashback. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣9️⃣1️⃣
Oh this was good. My first thought was isn‘t this supposed to be a thriller, but oh well, I like it anyway. Then the tide turned, and it twisted and twisted and then twisted again because 3 times makes it real!
I stayed up too late finishing this book bc I couldn‘t leave it alone!! Author really makes you ponder essential truths about our deepest motives & values. How far would you go to protect (control?) your flesh and blood? How far would you go to obliterate the truth if you don‘t even know what the truth is?? Great book 📚👀🔪📱🩸🧠😱

I have always been a huge fan of Sarah Pekkanen‘s writing. Her earlier women‘s fiction books are some of my favorites. However, I‘m starting to think I might just not be a fan of her thrillers. To be honest I don‘t find them that “thrilling”. In Gone Tonight we find out pretty early on why the mother has been lying and keeping things from her daughter and after that it dragged on too long for me. I found myself skipping a good amount of it ⬇️
Sarah Pekkanen will wow you with her newest book! Hold on for the big twist in the plot! It will take you by surprise, and have you turning the pages. The author has a writing style in all of her books of doing this and is fast becoming one of the authors that I really look forward to reading her books because I know I‘m in for a real treat! Run and grab a copy of this book.. it‘s a not to be missed book!ARC in exchange for review.
So excited that I got this so quickly on Libby. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend an Audible credit on this book so I was thrilled Libby released it so quickly. I knew this would be a great listen with the infamous narrator, Kate Mara, whose voice is entrancing. So far I'm enthralled, the narration is excellent, although, I think the impact would be stronger with two narrators. But other than that I'm dying to see what happens next!
This was my first time reading this author's work and it will not be my last. It is a riveting thriller about a mother-daughter relationship built on many lies. I enjoyed the characters and the two points of view. The build up of tension as we find out more about what is really going is effective and the slight twist at the end was well done. I also enjoyed the retirement setting and respect shown to the it. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. 4.25
Oooh, this was excellent! A satisfying twisty tale about a mother and the lengths she goes to to protect her daughter. The book is told from alternating POVs. Highly recommend!
From the author of The Golden Couple comes another domestic thriller. Compelling. Great writing.
What would make a teenager disappear in the night?
You will be shocked at the lies & deception!
I can‘t imagine being this close to my mom. An inseparable mother/daughter until the daughter wants to strike out on her own at the age of 24!
Why is their relationship so bizarre?!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Despite some believability issues, this was actually quite good. The suspense builds wonderfully and the storyline is fresh and interesting. I was thoroughly engaged and eager to see what the outcome would be. There was even a twist of sorts to satisfy those who need twisty endings.
…about the narration

- Kate Mara was really quite good for the most part but WHY didn‘t they have two narrators?
Possibly the best thriller I've read this year and her best one yet. I loved it. Every twist and turn had me on the edge and guessing.

Sarah Pekkanen
PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER
Why has Ruth continually moved from city to city all her life?
Why has she kept her and her daughter's life private and a secret?
BECAUSE...Ruth has a huge secret.
GONE TONIGHT is a slow buildup that made me wonder where the book was going.
Once it is apparent where it is going, you won't want to put the book down.

Catherine Sterling thinks she knows her mother. Ruth Sterling is quiet, hardworking, and lives for her daughter. All her life, it's been just the two of them against the world. But now, Catherine is ready to spread her wings, move from home, and begin a new career. And Ruth Sterling will do anything to prevent that from happening.
I‘ve learned from reading Pekkanen‘s other books that she is great at writing domestic thrillers. This one also didn‘t disappoint. When Catherine is ready to take a new job away from home, her mom, Ruth, fears her past will catch up to them. Deceit & misdirection plays a big role here. Going into it with only knowing the synopsis is best as there are so many little revelations that happen and keep you glued to the pages.

This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.
For me this was a 3 🌟 read. Whilst it was a good read and at times I was riveted...there were those odd times where I found myself skimming to get back to the action. To be fair when it was good it was unputdownable good. Story of a complex mother and daughter relationship and secrets. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks
