Where Monsters Dwell
Where Monsters Dwell | Jorgen Brekke
7 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
A murder at the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia, bears a close resemblance to one in Trondheim, Norway. The corpse of the museum curator in Virginia is found flayed in his office by the cleaning staff; the corpse of an archivist at the library in Norway, is found inside a locked vault used to store delicate and rare books. Richmond homicide detective Felicia Stone and Trondheim police inspector Odd Singsaker find themselves working on similar murder cases, committed the same way, but half a world away. And both murders are somehow connected to a sixteenth century palimpsest bookThe Book of Johnwhich appears to be a journal of a serial murderer back in 1529 Norway, a book bound in human skin. A runaway bestseller in Norway, Jrgen Brekke's Where Monsters Dwell has since sold to over fourteen countries. Where Monsters Dwell is the most awaited English language crime fiction debut in years.

#LMPBC #Round4 #GroupL I am so, so sorry I picked this. I stayed up to finish it so I could mail it out tomorrow but ugh. It‘s so bad. I can‘t force this on anyone. I will go back to my initial pick this weekend, finish it, and FedEx it on Monday. This one is so bad, you‘ll hate me. The characters are flat, the plot is ridiculous, and goodness, the misogyny is breathtaking.

Kayla.Adriena Oh man sorry you hated it! 6y
TrishB Nothing like an honest review! 6y
DGRachel @TrishB Was I too harsh? 😂 6y

TrishB 😂😂 put it this way- I don‘t want to read it anytime soon (like never). 6y
Amanda61 Lol. Wow. *Almost* wanna read it out of curiosity! Hopefully you'll like your upcoming reads better 🤞 6y
DGRachel @Amanda61 I rolled my eyes so hard they almost got stuck in the back of my head. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I have to wonder if I read the same book as some of the Goodreads reviewers. The other 1-star reviews though help me not feel alone in my disdain for this one. It‘s bad. It‘s really bad. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y

Hey #LMPBC #GroupL. I‘m not feeling the first book I picked (City of Spies) and trying to force myself through it is sending me into a bit of a reading slump. Would you mind if I switched to the tagged book? If anyone really objects, I‘ll keep going, but I thought I‘d at least ask. 😊

Kayla.Adriena Definitely don't mind. Go for it! 6y
shellleigh33 I‘m good with it 😊 6y

@merelybookish beat me to posting Grover today, so I had to go to my #TBR for #lyricalapril #themonster Something tells me the monster isn't going to be nearly as lovable. 😱

merelybookish I think Grover is probably lovable enough for two posts! 😁 8y
dsfisher Darn I was sure you'd get Grover. It was a awesome favorite 8y
Cinfhen Definitely not as lovable as Grover, but your current choice sounds good...stacked! 8y

Found this under a pile of clothes after starting it a month or so back. Gruesome murders a plenty!

#greatfirstlines: "The mendicant monk had heard few good things about Bergen and even fewer about Norway, the land where he was born, about which he had forgotten so much." The first chapter is set in Bergen in 1528, and having been there so many times to visit my husband's family I enjoyed reading how little had changed around the old wharf and old town! #booktober

Finished this while enjoying a nice, cool (finally!) night on the back porch. Despite having really gory murders, this turned into a solid Scandinavian thriller.

MrBook Cooool! 😁 8y
Zelma Nice porch and lights! 👍 8y
