Possession
Possession | Celia Fremlin
2 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
'Britain's equivalent to Patricia Highsmith, Celia Fremlin wrote psychological thrillers that changed the landscape of crime fiction for ever: her novels are domestic, subtle, penetrating - and quite horribly chilling.' Andrew Taylor Possession was Celia Fremlin's seventh novel, first published in 1969. Middle-class mother Clare Erskine initially thinks it a great stroke of luck when her 19 year-old daughter Sarah becomes engaged to a young man with a steady job. However Clare's betrothed, Mervyn Redmayne, has a notable black mark against him: a widowed mother with a petulant, inescapable grip on her son. Brilliant... yet another of Miss Fremlin's triumphs.' Times 'Fremlin, masterly delineator of suburban sin and distiller of eerie tensions from commonplace events, achieves a formidable triumph in this new thriller... a must for addicts of the genre.' Another beaut from Celia Fremlin , complete with creepy dolls. Clare Erskines daughter Sarah is engaged to an accountant, Mother is very pleased, at last a solid , respectable lad, or is he ? And is his possessive mother pleased?! Taking an interesting look at mothers influences over their children. Couldn‘t put this down.

This is probably the best (and most excessive) usage of the “cover blurb” that I‘ve ever seen. 😆

(I keep wanting to say “that‘s what he said” after each one 😆😆).

What do you think @Cathythoughts and @Tamra ? This one features a pathologically obsessed mother whose darling boy has just become engaged. Yikes!

jlhammar Wow, I‘ve never seen a cover like that! That is some fantastic blurbing. You all are making me want to try Fremlin sooner rather than later. 2y
Ruthiella Whew! 😅 I need a cold shower and a cigarette after reading those blurbs! 😆 2y
Tamra Oh yes! 😵 We might need to start a Fremlin club! 2y

Cathythoughts Oh yes ! Sounds like a good one Leah. I‘ll be getting that next. She‘ll write a great story on that theme 😳 2y
erzascarletbookgasm @Tamra Fremlin club sounds great! But my library has no Fremlin! 😢 And her books are not easily available over here. 2y
erzascarletbookgasm Never seen a cover like that! Eye catching! 2y
Amiable That cover is to-die-for! (See what I did there? 😀 … That‘s what he said. 😉) (edited) 2y
batsy Excellent cover! It seems to cover all the bases 😂 2y
Tamra @Amiable 😉 2y
LeahBergen @jlhammar I hope you like her when you do! 😊 2y
LeahBergen @Tamra I think we already have an unofficial one! 😆 2y
LeahBergen @vivastory Me, too! 😆 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I think she will, too! 2y
LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm They‘re a bit tricky to find (which is a shame). 2y
LeahBergen @Amiable 😆😆 2y
LeahBergen @batsy All the bases, indeed. 😆 2y
Cathythoughts @Tamra I think a Fremlin Club is a great idea. As you say Leah , we kind of do have an unofficial one. I just counted 23 books ( including short stories and poetry ) … and I would gladly reread the ones I‘ve already read. Something to think about ! Meanwhile let‘s see .. the unofficial group may gather momentum 😁 2y
Tamra @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen true! I am all for it, official or unofficial. 2y
Aimeesue “It grips like grim death!!” That‘s excellent. 😂 2y
sarahbarnes Omg…”that‘s what she said”. 😂😂😂 2y
