Also, this is my first general fiction book, so I have picked the color green to represent it. My second book for the Asian readathon. The challenge for this one: read a book by an Asian author or featuring an Asian character that is focused on identity and self-discovery. This book has a cast of fourteen Vietnamese women all trying to find themselves while navigating family dynamics and messy relationships. #asianreadathon2023
so-soMixed feelings with this novel. I liked the “fortune” folklore/myth/story and the dynamic of this family. But sometimes characters actions/behaviors seemed to me like short stories/chunks without a well story integration, as a whole. It has some funny scenes but also some scenes were like “forced” to be funny. But it seems that this is an unpopular opinion with this novel🤷🏽♀️ 3⭐️

pickThis was a low pick for me. Audio probably wasn‘t the best format to read this one in. Way too many characters and names for me to keep track of and remember. Overall, I liked this family saga and family drama.

so-soThe scope and number of characters in this book was too ambitious for its length. I liked this large family of Vietnamese women living in SoCal, but I kept having to remind myself of how the relationships fit right up to the end.
A Vietnamese family is cursed to have only daughters. When sisters relocate after the war, they and their children form a tangled mess that often argues, but perhaps a death, wedding, and baby can bring them together.
pickI really enjoyed this book! I found it to be a cute story about the relationships between mothers and daughters and how even when they grow apart they can always grow back together. It was a great read!

A solid pick for me! Full of family drama, generational curses, so many sisters, and a lot of heart. Things felt quite stressful for most of it, but the many layers of endings were very satisfying; I love a punny title; and that orange fight was iconic!!

pickThis was very entertaining. It‘s about a multigenerational Vietnamese family and their drama.
I was responsible for getting my granddaughter Presley to a doubleheader in Wisconsin this weekend. As she was digging through my tote bag, she said “Grammy, why did you bring a book?” I replied “What else was I gonna do while you warmed up for an hour?” Doesn‘t she know me better than this? Then again she‘s a girl who loves math over reading. 🤨🥲
pickThere were some serious undertones to this book, but the funny and snarky won out. One 70ish grandmother, three 50ish (well 4) daughters, and 8 adult granddaughters exceeded my ability to track who belonged to whom. So I gave up and just appreciated the nuances of each woman‘s experience as a Vietnamese-American. ↓
