Story of Art Without Men
Story of Art Without Men | Katy Hessel
30 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 18 to read
From Leonardo da Vinci to Jean-Michel Basquiat, the great painters and sculptures who have defined the fine art canon have largely been men. Katy Hessel seeks to right that wrong by cataloging, celebrating, and elevating women artists and placing their groundbreaking work in its historical, political, and cultural context. From the Renaissance to the present day, Hessel breaks down each time period and movement using a global lens, expanding the canon to include the work of non-Western artists, queer and racially marginalized artists, photographers, textile artists, and more.Discover the glittering Sofonisba Anguissola of the Renaissance and the radical work of Harriet Powers in the nineteenth century. Explore the Dutch Golden Age, the astonishing work of postwar artists in Latin America, and the women defining art in the 2020s. Featuring more than 100 works of art in color, The Story of Art Without Men is a timeless and essential addition to any library.

Found many artists to research further. The methodology &structure of this book is very well done. The focus was on painters & sculptors, there were also notations for fiber art, photographers, performance art & more
The answer to The Story of Art by Ernst Gombrich (published in 1950, included no women until the 16th edition which added 1 woman) the intro might be a lil “Girl Power 101” feminism but the art, &stories behind the art, are still good

A great book and absolutely delightful reading experience - Katy Hessel starts from the top and tells the stories of the women who did and did not make the survey texts. It brought me back and inspired me to keep learning.

So now that I've read both the bloke and non-bloke versions, you'll be wanting to know who wore it best, right?

Well the art in this one is just as good as in The Story of Art, but I did sometimes find myself wishing for Gombrich's infectious storytelling whilst reading this excellent collection of art-thusiasm.

You can tell which eras Hessel is most interested in because then her writing gleams.

Another wonderful book about art ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finished both Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and The Story of Art without Men

I read both Spy x Family and Black Butterflies

I‘ve just started Love Marriage

Cinfhen Ohhhhh 🤩fantastic week ♥️ 1y
Cinfhen Do u have a favorite from the Women‘s Prize?? 1y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen The Bandit Queens was my favourite so off course it didn‘t make the shortlist. I guess that‘s why I start reading when the longlist is announced. 1y

Cinfhen I‘m looking forward to reading BB but I was also sad the BQ didn‘t make the shortlist. I‘m trying Trespasses again in print because audio didn‘t work for me. 1y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen From the shortlist I now have one book left to read, Fire Rush, and I picked it up from the library yesterday. So far I‘ve enjoyed Trespasses and Black Butterflies from the shortlist. And from the comments I‘ve seen for Pod, I‘m going to sit that on out unless the library gets it. 1y
Cinfhen I‘ve decided to skip Pod too. Apparently dolphin gang rape is where I cross the line 🤪 1y

“the Guerrilla Girls brought public attention to the inequalities and systematic discriminations in the art world, and ultimately asked just how did museums get away with celebrating the history of patriarchy instead of the history of art?”

“Revisiting the statistics in 2012, they found that little had improved: ‘Less than 4% of the artists in the Modern Art sections are women, but 76% of the nudes are female.‘”

‘I don‘t think there has ever been a man who treated a woman as an equal and that‘s all I would have asked for - I know I am worth as much as they‘ - Berthe Morisot, 1890

What does modern art mean, anyway? A break from the past, the eradication of hierarchies, lines shattered on a canvas, scenes of everyday subjects in modern society? Yes, you could say to all those things, but what makes modern art ‘modern‘, as art historian Diane Radycki argues, is the participation of women artists.

With its glittering surfaces and elegant figures The Opera of the Sea bears striking similarities with Klimt‘s famous The Kiss, 1907, made five years later. Klimt would have seen these works (Waerndorfer was a prominent collector of his) - and yet … has Macdonald Mackintosh‘s name ever been mentioned in reference to Klimt?

(p.99)

I‘m reading my way through The History of Art, and am 100p in and already at the 20th century. Not sure how I feel about that, but not surprising that not much female art from before that is preserved.

I read Like.

#WeeklyForecast

Not that many books in my forecast this week, but they are books I‘ve started today

The History of Art without Men is a Christmas present that I want to take my time with.

Like is the last of Ali Smith‘s novels I have left to read, which is probably why it has been going back and forth to the library a few times. I wasn‘t sure what I wanted to read so a favorite author seemed safe.

Not sure what I‘ll read afterwards.

Cinfhen It‘s kind of nice to just see what catches your attention next. 2y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen Absolutely, but I hope the book spin picks will help me out 😉 2y

Can anyone name 5 female artists? (Discount yourself if it‘s your subject area or job!)
I shocked myself, how friggin sad is that. You will be able to do so after this.
At times just reaffirming history‘s continual erasing of women, it was also full of information and optimism for the future. A lot of detail and I‘ve no doubt I‘ll revisit. And target my gallery viewing.
Also a beautifully presented book ♥️

BarbaraBB I can but it‘s my job indeed and I know how hard it is to include female artists in 19th century exhibitions because they are so hard to find! (edited) 2y
TrishB @BarbaraBB you probably don‘t need to read this then! I found it fascinating and eye opening. 2y

TrishB @squirrelbrain I got with a gift voucher but full price. Think it was worth it though. I‘m sure it will come up on offer again. 2y
TheBookHippie I can but I raised a double art major and my two best friends, both artist! It‘s truly difficult however. 2y
RaeLovesToRead Am I allowed graphic artists like Fiona Staples? If not, then I've only got 4... oh dear... in my defence, I can name a lot of ART by women, but "that woman that made a video of herself aggressively eating a sausage" probably doesn't count! 2y
TrishB @TheBookHippie @RaeLovesToRead it‘s difficult for us and we‘re probably the very well educated and well read % of the population! The author makes a good point. 2y
rwmg I could fairly easily picture the art of 4 women but struģgled with their names 2y
batsy I struggled but I finally did after thinking for so long. I shocked myself, too! Definitely need to check this out. 2y
TrishB @rwmg yes I did a bit of that too! 2y

'Of course the women were important, but it was because they were our muses. They weren't artists' so claimed Roland Penrose...to legendary feminist Whitney Chadwick... When Chadwick later asked artist Leonora Carrington for her thoughts on the Surrealist muse, she replied, 'I thought it was bullshit. I didn't have time to be anyone's muse... I was too busy rebelling against my family and learning to be an artist.'
