The Holiday Trap | Roan Parrish
20 posts | 21 read | 6 to read
For fans of Alexandria Bellefleur and Casey McQuiston comes a charming, hilarious, and heartwarming LGBTQIA+ romcom about two separate couples finding love over the holidays from acclaimed author Roan Parrish! FROM A COZY NEW ENGLAND HAVEN Greta Russakoff loves her tight-knit family and tiny Maine hometown, but they can't seem to understand what it's like to be a lesbian living in such a small world. When an act of familial meddling goes way too far, she realizes just how desperately she needs space to figure out who she is. TO THE HEART OF NEW ORLEANS Truman Belvedere's heart is crushed when he learns that his boyfriend has a secret life including a husband and daughter. Reeling, all he wants is a place to lick his wounds far, far away from Louisiana. COMES ONE HOLIDAY THAT'LL CHANGE THEIR LIVES Enter a mutual friend with a life-altering idea: swap homes for the holidays. For one perfect month, Greta and Truman will have a chance to experience a whole new world...and maybe fall in love with the partner of their dreams. But all holidays must come to an end, and eventually these two transplants will have to decide whether the love (and found family) they each discovered so far from home is worth fighting for.

Following disruptions in their lives, Greta and Truman swap houses for a month and quickly fall in love with their new places and people. I enjoyed this playful book and loved watching both characters grow. There was no trap, and holidays are so minimal that I think the author thought a holiday romance would sell better than a regular romance, but otherwise this was a lot of fun.

I started THE HOLIDAY TRAP late last night and quickly fell in love with it. Love the characters, the settings, the plants, the dogs, the references to THE HOLIDAY, the bookish sorta-mystery… the whole shebang, really. It‘s so much my thing that I‘m kinda shocked at its low Litsy rating.

So far, though, it does strike me as another of those regular romances that get marketed as romcoms for trendiness or whatever. Minimal wacky hijinks in sight.

Graciouswarriorprincess I enjoyed it. Happy reading! 11mo

A holiday house swap with a m/m romance and a f/f romance. Greta and Truman need to escape so Greta heads to NOLA and Truman heads to Maine. I didn‘t like Greta‘s love interest as she seemed more like her therapist. Have to give this audiobook a so-so. I have Covid and feel like crap so that may influence my opinion.

LiteraryinPA Oh no! Feel better soon! 💗 2y

This was a really fun book. 'The Holiday' is one of my all time favorite movies so I was excited for this queer version & it did not disappoint! Greta has an overbearing family & Truman just found his partner cheating so they decide to switch homes. Both characters find new love interests & life opportunities. Both the settings of small town Maine and New Orleans are described enchantingly. I loved the lush depictions of plant life throughout

A queer version of the movie The Holiday. Truman and Greta both need to leave home at the holidays and a mutual friend sets them up to do a house swap. Truman goes to an island in Maine and Greta to New Orleans. Self-realization, growth and new love abounds. I cared more about the mm relationship than ww so I wish they got more time but throughly enjoyable.

I mostly liked this book. Both Truman and Greta are likeable characters (Truman more so to me than Greta), and I loved the ending. What I didn‘t like was the explicit sex scenes, but that‘s just me and my inner prude. Also, in some parts, Greta‘s girlfriend gets a little too preachy for me. But, in the end, both Truman & Greta get their happy endings — the book IS a romance — and I loved that. #audiowalk

The heater guy was here while I was gone on my walks, so we finally have glorious heat! It‘s now colder outside than inside. 😊 I‘m still enjoying this book, but it‘s not really a holiday book; it‘s a book that takes place during the holidays. #audiowalk

Reggie Yay for heat! 2y

It‘s cold as heck in our house! The heater people have not gotten here yet and will not get here today. My husband and I went out for a bit, and it was warmer outside. We‘re back now and are under the blankets with our heating pads and space heater. We‘re fixing to eat a pizza and watch some version of A Christmas Carol. Merry Christmas! #audiowalk

I love Greta‘s old lady friend, Muriel. If I was an old lady in New Orleans‘ Garden District, I‘d want to live like that. Today, the temperatures were in the 20s when I went for my walk. Although I don‘t have many cold weather clothes, I do know how to layer — that helped. #audiowalk

Someone posted a quiz— “what holiday LGBTQ+ book should you read next.” I got this. The person who posted the quiz said they liked this author, so I thought I‘d try it. So far so good. Greta and Truman both have reasons why they want to get out of their respective towns, so they switch houses for a month — Greta goes to New Orleans, while Truman goes to small town Maine (woefully unprepared for the cold.) #audiowalk

KathyWheeler It was @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian who posted the quiz. I couldn‘t find the original post, but finally did. The quiz link is https://www.autostraddle.com/quiz-what-queer-holiday-romance-should-you-read/ (edited) 2y

Greta & Truman swap homes for the holidays & both find adventure, love, & lives that fit better than the ones they left. I liked the first 2/3 of this book then started felt like there was too much focus on Greta's story when I wanted more of Truman/Ash. That may be because I didn't much like her love interest, Carys. Ultimately I liked it but a lot of the boundary setting was heavy handed. I want more sweetness & fluff in my holiday romances. ☺️

So this one was definitely not for me! I‘m not a huge romance reader but I‘ve come to learn I like holiday set romances a little bit (if the romance isn‘t overly cheesy or the only thing happening in the story). What I just learned from trying to listen to this audiobook? I definitely do NOT like “spicy” romance! Imagine my surprise when I start listening to what I think is going to be sweet house swap romance and the graphic sex begins! Cont‘d ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: It was a total shocker to me and I don‘t consider myself a prude 🤣🤷🏼‍♀️. I think if you like spicy romance you will probably love the story…the characters were wonderful and sweet and without the descriptive sex I would definitely have finished it! 2y
LiteraryinPA This is really good to know because I‘m the same with sex scenes. I‘m going to unstack. Thanks for the heads up! (edited) 2y

A sort of queer The Holiday with a woman with a codependent family in small town Maine and a man who just discovered he was dating a married man swapping houses through a mutual friend. It was a cute read. Not as holiday focused as some, but sweet and I particularly loved the relationship between Truman and Ash.

This is a cute LGBTQ+ holiday rom com inspired by one of my favorite holiday movies - The Holiday. It follows the plot fairly closely. Two people swap houses for the holidays and rediscover their selves and find love. I liked the male character‘s arc more overall, but this was a fun easy read for the season. 3.5⭐️

Doing some audio baking today to make homemade peppermint marshmallows! Turned out surprisingly well for my first ever attempt and very festive!

monalyisha I truly love snackable, flavored marshmallows. And I bet one of these would be great on top of a hot chocolate, too! 2y

4/5

Take The Holiday and make it queer, and you've got The Holiday Trap. I think a two couple romance is hard to pull off, but I was so invested in both Greta and Truman's story lines that I never minded when the POV switched. The holiday elements are a little more subtle than a lot of the more Hallmark inspired romances, with mentions of Chanukah and Christmas dispersed throughout the book, but I still thought it was a fun holiday romance.

rachelsbrittain This makes me even more excited for this one! 2y
