The Haunting of Alejandra
The Haunting of Alejandra: A Novel by V. Castro | V. Castro
A woman is haunted by the Mexican folk demon La Llorona as she unravels the dark secrets of her family history in this ravishing and provocative horror novel. Alejandra no longer knows who she is. To her husband, she is a wife, and to her children, a mother. To her own adoptive mother, she is a daughter. But they cannot see who Alejandra has become: a woman struggling with a darkness that threatens to consume her. Nor can they see what Alejandra sees. In times of despair, a ghostly vision appears to her, the apparition of a crying woman in a ragged white gown. When Alejandra visits a therapist, she begins exploring her familys history, starting with the biological mother she never knew. As she goes deeper into the lives of the women in her family, she learns that heartbreak and tragedy are not the only things she has in common with her ancestors. Because the crying woman was with them, too. She is La Llorona, the vengeful and murderous mother of Mexican legend. And she will not leave until Alejandra follows her mother, her grandmother, and all the women who came before her into the darkness. But Alejandra has inherited more than just pain. She has inherited the strength and the courage of her foremothersand she will have to summon everything they have given her to banish La Llorona forever.

This wasn't as good as I thought it would be but definitely original and the more I read the more depth I saw and found myself drawn into the story. I love that we see the story not just from Alejandra's perspective, but her ancestor's, her therapist's, and even the creature who haunts Alejandra. This book is about generational trauma, mental health, forming an identity outside of our family, and so much more. Paired with a colorful puzzle🎧 🧩

LiteraryinPA Beautiful! Though I‘m always wary of puzzles that aren‘t square/rectangular. 5mo
CaliforniaCay @LiteraryinLawrence I was wary at first too! But since it's all color coordinated that made it a bit easier. I'm currently working one one in the shape of a man's head and I've been stuck on it for over a month. I'd like to go back to regular shapes after this 🤪 5mo

The beginning (&ending!) were very strong. Alejandra dealing with obvious PPD/PPA (& likely Generalized Anxiety & Religious Trauma) +the drudgery of giving up her goals to move across the country with her narcissistic husband &their 3 kids +a creature that‘s threatened her.
We also see how her ancestors were affected by this literal generational curse. Some POVs were intriguing, but I found they pulled away from the story rather than added to it.

I loved the premise for this story but it fell a little short for me. I wanted to feel more of a connection with the characters but always felt a little distant. The best part for me were the generational stories. ⭐️⭐️

I like the way V. Castro incorporates Mexican mythology with current days. The way Alejandra felt about her life with her husband and 3 children rang so true. The amount and despair a mother can feel. The book examines generational trauma, and how a curse can effect a family line.

This reads as Paolo Coelho- inspired horror fantasy. It has a lot going for it, but the dialogue / narrative voice read a bit flat too me for the emotional grappling Alejandra was going through. Great concept.

I. Loved. This.

Such a haunting and dark story. The multiple POV‘s were well done and I never lost interest. V. Castro is becoming a favorite.

I am so enjoying this. I was drawn to it before it came out and had a feeling I‘d love it. Horror, mental health, spousal weaponized incompetence, generational curses. I think I may have found my favorite book so far this year! This is a library loan but I‘ll be adding it to my personal library.

I received this book in the mail today. I preordered this book from B&N. It sounded really interesting to me. The cover and dust jacket of this book are beautiful because of the flowers. I might not read this book right away but I still want to read it. This might be the perfect book for Fall so I‘ll probably save it until then. It‘s Spring and I don‘t feel like reading anything spooky right now.

The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro is a story of grief, anger, and generational trauma that won‘t remove its claws from the backs of the women in this bloodline.

This deeply distressing tale is an amazing example of real-world horror mixed with the paranormal.

THIS BOOK! Hands down my absolute favorite book for 2023! Yes, it‘s a horror story. Yes, there‘s a haunting. And yes there‘s La Llorona but there‘s much more to this story! This is a beautifully crafted exploration of generational trauma and the impact it has on the women in one family. This is hauntingly beautiful, cleverly thought-provoking, emotionally charged, deeply moving This book deserves every one of its 5stars and more!!!

V. Castro once again delivers a propulsive story centered around women that will scare you, anger you, and show the injustices women face in our society.

This story is about La Llorona. It's a story of motherhood, of dreams, and of survival. It's a multi-generational tale told through the women in one family who are cursed.

Probably my favorite by this author.
