From the New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye comes a riveting short story about an impossible connection across two centuries that could make the difference between peace or war.
Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption.
One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.
An American ship is taking heavy fire in the North Atlantic—but no one else has reported an attack, and the information relayed by the young US officer, Matt Jackson, seems all wrong. The contact that Lily has made on the other end of the radio channel says it’s…2023.
Across an eighty-year gap, Lily and Matt must find a way to help each other: Matt to convince her that the war she’s fighting can still be won, and Lily to help him stave off the war to come. As their connection grows stronger, they both know there’s no telling when time will run out on their inexplicable link.

An overdue update after last weekend‘s readathons. I read Carrie on the train from Newark to DC, but after that whirlwind trip my brain was mush. So I decided to start clearing some of the short stories off my list, including those pictured. #PSReadathon #31by31 #Spookoween #BirthdayBashReadathon

Here are my top 24 reads of 2023. Why 24? Because that's how many covers fit into the frame. 😁

A radio operator listening for U-boats during WWII catches a transmission form the future. She arranges for a radio to be delivered to a specific place and point in time, hoping against reason to establish communication. A connection over space and time ensues.

Emotional but not melodramatic like these things often are; logical as much as time travel can be; short and to the point; concise—a nice, round story that hit a spot.

Loved this short story! I avoid reading short stories because they tend to feel rushed or incomplete. Not this one. It‘s a true gem! Intriguing storyline, well drawn characters and a real tear-jerker (and I don‘t cry easily). ⬇️

Bluebird Lily Baines, a signal officer in 1943 picks up a transmission from an American signal officer in 2023. After listening helplessly to his ship go down, she finds a way to communicate with him to try to prevent the disaster. It reminds me a bit of ‘The Lake House‘ movie with Keanu Reeves. Though i enjoyed this more. I will definitely look for other works by Kate Quinn…and perhaps give other short stories a try. 2y

Day 22 #AdventRecommends November Book 2

This is only a short novella, but absolutely loved this story that reached across time in a magical way. Another story that illuminate the work of the code breakers in the Second World War, but also has a modern dimension.

Loved this short story from Kate Quinn, that again covered the brilliant job done by those connected with Bletchley Park around the country. Also had a great connection to the current day. Very unique and left me quite emotional at the end.

rubyslippersreads I liked this too. It was especially interesting because my dad was a ham radio operator. And it referenced Downton Abbey. 😊 2y
Andrew65 @rubyslippersreads Loved the cross time aspect to the story and how they developed a relationship across time and the air waves. 2y

This was another #AmazonFirstReads that I listened to today while waiting for a friend. It‘s a short story that takes place in WWII that involves a bit of time travel. Loved it!! I actually have a couple of Kate Quinn books that I haven‘t read and this definitely inspired me to dig them out and move them way up my TBR. ❤️👍

DGRachel I enjoyed this, too. I‘ve read 2 of Quinn‘s book and loved them both. The Huntress was the first book my entire book club loved and that alone is impressive. 🤣🤣 2y
Bklover I definitely want to read more of hers. Not sure why I haven‘t! @DGRachel 2y

After The Rose Code I am definitely interested in more from this author. This one is an incredibly short story about two signal operators in different time periods who have a brief connection. She packs a punch in the slim story and it‘s definitely worth a read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5)
Well crafted take on a common concept, connection across time. The writer avoided cliches and over-used tropes to tell an engaging story about a young woman working to save lives in conflicts 80 years apart.

Remember when you were a kid, and you could just find a quiet place to read and check out of reality for a few days? Before kids and adult responsibilities and concerns kept you tethered to reality? I have a very stressful week coming up, with commitments and medical tests for family members (not me, but it's actually worse when it's not), and all I want is to be 12 years old again, at least for the weekend. Started tagged book, and kinda regret

SleepyDragon choosing it. I mean, it's really good so far, but the subject is heavy and serious, and I'm feeling the MC's anxiety a little too much. So I put it down after only about 10 minutes. 2y
MatchlessMarie @SleepyDragon ugh I know what you mean. Hoping for a good outcome and that you can find small pockets of time this week to escape. 💛 2y
SleepyDragon @MatchlessMarie Thank you. I think I'm too much in my head to read right now, so I'm going to watch a little Netflix and fold some laundry while my kids play video games and my husband does his fantasy football draft. I'll try to read more later. I really do want to read this short story. It's started out really good. 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I hope next week is better ❤️❤️ 2y
Dragon I hope you find some time to disappear into your story. Take care of yourself 💚🐉 2y
