The librarian had to search for this one and it came all the way from a library in Virginia. Finished it last week. Wait, again, provides a deep character study of a troubled family, with a manipulative mother and siblings who deal with their upbringing in their own way. Generational trauma outlined so well. This is a character study you can sink into and find humor even amidst the barbs.

Great book!!

I‘m in the Litsy minority on this one because I just didn‘t love this. It grew on me a bit overtime and I did end up caring about the characters but I honestly didn‘t find it especially funny or special as far as stories about dysfunctional families go.

My #bookspin for May is Ruth Reichl‘s memoir Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table, which has been languishing on my shelf for more than five years. But my #doublespin is the tagged book, which I impulse-purchased a month ago based on how much I loved her book Our Fathers (thanks #europacollective!)

This is a sad and funny account of a dysfunctional family, and the so very different twins Hanna and Alice. I really enjoyed this one and it is definitely a pick but not as good as Our Fathers. I can‘t wait to read the rest of her backlist.

A sweet, sad story of not fitting in, feeling a bit “odd” in yourself, family dysfunction and mental ill health. It‘s also really quite funny. I‘m not going there with the many comparisons to Sorrow & Bliss as both are great books in their own right. This didn‘t quite capture my heart as S&B did, but was lovely nonetheless.

So many have loved this book and I did enjoy while reading but overall it wasn‘t uniquely special or memorable. Another story of a dysfunctional childhood that affects twin sisters in different ways. I think my expectations were just too high. #GoodNotGreat

Dysfunctional family stories are also my jam and oh boy, did this one deliver. I was completely mesmerized from start to finish. Just loved it.

I loved this from the first sentence. A dysfunctional family, each with their own distinct personalities, misunderstanding each other. It was funny, dark at times, relatable in some ways and the characters were really well written. Brilliant! 💛

I really couldn‘t choose between these 2 books in July; both have made my top books of the whole year.

This was my first Wait, but I‘ve since read more and everything she writes is fabulous.

I listened to Invisible Child on audio and it was fascinating but heartbreaking.

I so enjoyed this book ! The story of a dysfunctional family.
I really felt for the characters. Life is a challenging business ( for us all ♥️).
There was a good mix of sadness and laughter..just like in life.
The episode with the ferret was a scream, mayhem.
I must look up her other books now👍🏻♥️

This was one wildly dysfunctional family, both individually and together. It was laugh out loud funny at times, and incredibly uncomfortable reading at other times. It is scary to contemplate the misadjustments we pass on to our children through both nature and nurture. Although, if you're feeling your inadequacies as a parent, this book should make you feel like you're not half bad anyway!

"Perhaps this, she thinks at last, is why people really have children: not a biological urge at all, but because children provide a necessary weight, like an anchor, so that you might at last stop wondering what you are missing, so that you might at last feel you belong in your own life."

You really can‘t beat Littens for the great recommendations. Thanks Helen and Trish , my curiosity got the better of me when I saw your reviews, and I am LOVING this book. What a compelling read. 👌🏻

I was going to say ‘If you loved Sorrow and Bliss, then you‘ll love this‘. Then I went on Amazon to get the cover picture and that‘s the exact same as the first blurb I saw!

I‘m still trying to decide if it‘s even better. It has the same humour and covers the same difficult topics but, for me, it felt much closer to home. In fact, there was one part that had me 😲 it was so close.

One of my faves this year.
