The Sin Eater's Daughter
The Sin Eater's Daughter | Melinda Salisbury
Seventeen-year-old Twylla lives in the castle. But although she's engaged to the prince, Twylla isn't exactly a member of the court. She's the executioner. As the Goddess embodied, Twylla instantly kills anyone she touches. Each month, she's taken to the prison and forced to lay her hands on those accused of treason. No one will ever love a girl with murder in her veins. Even the prince, whose royal blood supposedly makes him immune to Twylla's fatal touch, avoids her company. But then a new guard arrives, a boy whose easy smile belies his deadly swordsmanship. And unlike the others, he's able to look past Twylla's executioner robes and see the girl, not the Goddess. Yet Twylla's been promised to the prince, and knows what happens to people who cross the queen. However, a treasonous secret is the least of Twylla's problems. The queen has a plan to destroy her enemies, a plan that requires a stomach-churning, unthinkable sacrifice. Will Twylla do what it takes to protect her kingdom? Or will she abandon her duty in favor of a doomed love?

"In the stories of old, a hero is the one who sweeps in with a drawn sword and noble face, to kill the Dragon and free the princess. In the stories of old it never seems to dawn on the princess that she should be careful not to put herself at mercy of those who would do her ill in the first place.

I don't live in the stories of old."

TheAromaofBooks Oooo looks like a good one!! 5y
InkedBookworm13 @TheAromaofBooks I agree. I don't even remember putting it on my TBR lol 5y
TheAromaofBooks I finally made a spreadsheet several years ago for my TBR so I could note down who inspired me to add the book (I follow a lot of book blogs; I've been a book blogger way longer than I have been a Litten!!) because books just kept appearing on the list! 5y

This book had a great premise but the plot was so slow and drawn out that the storytelling really suffered. The main character also doesn‘t have much personality and the Queen is so evil that I couldn‘t help but feel she was rather ridiculous. However, the story of the Sleeping Prince and his resurrection is very intriguing so I definitely want to continue this series to see what happens.

Strangely enough, I kind of liked it by the end. The action picked up, and the heroine grew up. Her choice at the end of the book showed me that she had changed her ways of thinking. I still hate myself for kind of liking the love triangle trope the author went with. I will probably eventually finish the series, just because I do want to know what will happen to the world itself, if not the characters.

Book finally started getting interesting at about 150 pages in, but I'm still not sure I like the main character...hoping to at least finish the book tomorrow so that I can move on. Kind of hopeful that after the big reveals that just happened, maybe the main character will grow up some

Finding this so slow - I remember why I stopped reading it before! I get so frustrated with teen books that are slow; it's like the opposite of what #YA should be! Did anyone read this one? Does it get better? Bc I'm close to bailing and I'm only 78 pages in!

This is what happens when you sit down in my house: a cat in my lap and a dog on my feet! Curling up to work on the #8intwo #minireadathon. So far I have about an hour and 40 minutes - last night's reading after midnight, plus driving and audiobooking to and from work today. Hoping to finish a few this weekend, including this one, which honestly I started months ago!

I did really like this but it was slow going at the beginning due to the amount of world building involved and I noticed about 3 typos in the book

Brilliant read and would definitely recommend - I would compare the writing styles to that of the brilliant Sarah J Maas - the writing style is amazing and the story itself is simply traditionally beautiful

Goddess of Poison: Gefährliche Berührung von Melinda Salisbury

At first Twylla is kind of a "monkey see, monkey do" type of character, which makes the book hard to keep on reading at first, but as events start to unfold she starts getting a bit of a voice and starts thinking for herself. Carefully crafted and very well presented. Not your typical kind of fairy tale, I like that the ending is unconventional. Looking forward to the sequel! The narrator did a wonderful job as well. 4.5⭐️️s ? ?? ?

Quote is from my 16 year old son who got into my car while this audiobook was playing: "Exactly what the hell are you listening to?" I plan on finishing this because I have a long drive coming up soon, but the book is mostly world-building, character development, and lusty snogging.

Karenmyers ETA: The reason he said that is that this book has many lengthy, drawn out parts where the young innocent protagonist discovers that she enjoys kissing. She describes it very graphically while evaluating her feelings at length using very active verbs! 8y

Finally finished the audiobook - the narrator is lovely. I have mixed feelings about the book overall. There were parts, passages, I really liked, but the author worked extra hard to keep that love triangle going. I'm just not a romance novel person, even if it has a fantasy wrapping.

I'm listening to the audiobook and I'm underwhelmed. Worth it to push through? Does it get good?

Jessisreading Oh good it wasn't just me! I listened to it for about an hour at the gym last week and was just...not engaged enough. I hope someone who has made it all the way through has something to say about it. 9y
Claireluana @Jessisreading I have given up (unless I hear I should push through). When she started talking about the imports/exports of the country in Ch 2, I was like: Nope. 😐 8y
moranadatter I don't know. I picked it up because I loved the cover and bailed after a few chapters because I lost interest. 8y

Eh. Passed the time as I drove, but don't need to rush out and get the sequel (unlike the other two books I've read most recently). Basically I found the narrator / protagonist too passive and too annoying. And the ending, while interesting, came out of nowhere.
