Charles Nodier was a 19th century French librarian, author and playwright ("Trilby" is probably his best known work now), and I really hope the translation of the above quote is exact, as that "almost" is so on point! ??
(EDIT: Wrong "Trilby"! I was thinking of George du Maurier ??♂️)
