The Nightmare Man
The Nightmare Man | J. H. Markert

T. Kingfisher meets Cassandra Khaw in a chilling horror novel that illustrates the fine line between humanity and monstrosity. Blackwood mansion looms, surrounded by nightmare pines, atop the hill over the small town of New Haven. Ben Bookman, bestselling novelist and heir to the Blackwood estate, spent a weekend at the ancestral home to finish writing his latest horror novel, The Scarecrow. Now, on the eve of the books release, the terrible story within begins to unfold in real life. Detective Mills arrives at the scene of a gruesome murder: a family butchered and bundled inside cocoons stitched from corn husks, and hung from the rafters of a barn, eerily mirroring the opening of Bookmans latest novel. When another family is killed in a similar manner, Mills, along with his daughter, rookie detective Samantha Blue, is determined to find the link to the bookand the killerbefore the story reaches its chilling climax. As the series of Scarecrow crimes continues to mirror the book, Ben quickly becomes the prime suspect. He cant remember much from the night he finished writing the novel, but he knows he wrote it in The Atrium, his grandfathers forbidden room full of numbered books. Thousands of books. Books without words. As Ben digs deep into Blackwoods history he learns he may have triggered a release of something trapped long agoand it wont stop with the horrors buried within the pages of his book.

Loved this book! The only reason I didn‘t give it 5 stars is because there were a lot of characters and it was a little hard to keep track of at times with the names, relations, nicknames etc. This book kept my attention through the entire thing without any lags. Definitely recommend for spooky season. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finished up the audiobook version of this on Sunday. I found it to be really interesting and increasingly gripping as it barreled towards the ending. I don‘t really read thrillers much, but maybe that will change with books like this. I was afraid the this would be some type of Nightmare on Elm Street rip-off. Although dealing with similar themes involving nightmares, this had its own solid, unique spin on things.

Mehso-so

This hurts to write because the book came so highly recommended. I can‘t say anything I want to for risk of spoilers. The book starts painfully slowly, and I nearly bailed 1/3 of the way out of boredom. The threads start to come together, I had a thought which turned out to be true, and that made me mad. I hate figuring out twists early. 😂 Anywho, I didn‘t find this creepy, scary, or original, but it wasn‘t dreadful either. #meh

DGRachel The more I think about it, the issue is one of expectations. The book was good for what it was - a kind of suspense/thriller. What I was promised and expected was a novel so terrifying and creepy that I wouldn‘t be able to walk outside alone at night for a few days. This is not that book. 1y
vivastory Sorry this didn't work for you. I'm finding that short stories work better for me lately in terms of creepiness. 1y
DGRachel @vivastory I have an ARC of the new Darcy Coates novel. My fingers are crossed for that one. Ooh, and I have another of hers on my shelf. Maybe I should grab that next… 1y

vivastory I haven't read Coates yet but I keep meaning to. I started the new Dilouie today. Really enjoying it. In fact I have only about 100 pages left 1y
vivastory Lol, looking through the feed for Episode 13 I see you didn't like it 🤷‍♂️ 1y
Chrys I may give this a try, but with proper expectations 1y
DGRachel @vivastory 🤣🤣 1y
DGRachel @Chrys Yes. I think my expectations were just too different from my experience. But also, there are readers who found it terrifying. So, maybe go in with no expectations? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
bthegood I enjoyed this, at first found it “scary“ then just creepy - it reminded me (a little) like “The Dark Half“ - by King - 🙂 It's hard not to expect a lot when reviews are good - sometimes though it's just a miss 🙂 (edited) 1y
DGRachel @bthegood Yeah, I know mine is an #unpopularopinion. I don‘t read a lot of King, and I tend to have an unpopular opinion about the scare factor of his work, too. The Shining didn‘t phase me. I also don‘t understand the fear factor around The Exorcist. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But, I was terrified by I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark. I do scare easily, I guess just by different things. 1y
bthegood @DGRachel The Shining is one of the scariest books I've read 😂- that's why I do not feel bad when my opinion is not popular - we all have differences and that's a good thing - keeps the reading world interesting😃 (edited) 1y

This right here was truly terrifying! And I can‘t even talk about why because it‘ll give too much away! There are some epic twists to this story and it definitely went down a path I did not see coming. It‘ll get under your skin (or at least it did mine) and really make you look a little closer at the scary shit that happens all around you. What nightmares are made of! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

It‘s #indiebookstoreday so I had to make a run to my happy place. The tagged book was a recommendation from Halli, one of the booksellers at Park Road Books. I know nothing about it other than Halli said it scared her so badly she couldn‘t take her dogs outside at night. Yes, please. 😂😂 (Not pictured is the new Veronica Speedwell that I bought for my mom). The ARC of Fairies was a gift-with-purchase. 🥰

Think Stephen King - The Shining and The Dark Half - this is along those lines (IMHO).
Ben Bookman is a writer whose stories (nightmares) are coming to life and it is all connected to the house he grew up in (the room with all the books). I enjoyed this - it was a very creepy read.

#MarvellousMarch a book not planned but finished during this readathon ( thanks for hosting @Andrew65)
Make a great day everyone - 🙂

This book wasn't what I was expecting, and for the first time in a long while that fact is an absolute good thing.
After the first few chapters I was on the fence with the story but soon found myself sucked in and unwilling to put the book down. It's always amazing when a story sinks its hooks into you as thoroughly as this one did for me.

I started this book yesterday and am almost halfway through but being a responsible adult is preventing me from just diving in and not coming back up for air until it's done and I'm sorry but that just doesn't seem fair

Great new horror!

This book follows a writer whose stories involve the scary stuff in nightmares and the urban legends that haunt us from childhood. Things become quite intense though when scenes from his new book are suddenly becoming real.

Markert has created a terrifying tale taking the reader through the darkest parts of the things that spook us in the night.

Also, the author references King and his works, which I love.

I loved this book. I felt I was reading a very original story. It took me places I usually don't find in books. There is so much to like here. The mysterious family mansion in the woods with the creepy room full of books and the insane asylum next door kept me guessing until the end. Ben was a good protagonist and I was never quite sure if he was innocent or not. The image of the moths covering the dead twisted trees will stay with me awhile.

Soubhiville Huh, that‘s my maiden name! Don‘t see it very often, I‘ll have to look into this book 😊! 2y
