The Turquoise Ledge
The Turquoise Ledge: A Memoir | Leslie Marmon Silko
9 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
A highly original and poetic self-portrait from one of America's most acclaimed writers. Leslie Marmon Silko's new book, her first in ten years, combines memoir with family history and reflections on the creatures and beings that command her attention and inform her vision of the world, taking readers along on her daily walks through the arroyos and ledges of the Sonoran desert in Arizona. Silko weaves tales from her family's past into her observations, using the turquoise stones she finds on the walks to unite the strands of her stories, while the beauty and symbolism of the landscape around her, and of the snakes, birds, dogs, and other animals that share her life and form part of her family, figure prominently in her memories. Strongly influenced by Native American storytelling traditions, The Turquoise Ledge becomes a moving and deeply personal contemplation of the enormous spiritual power of the natural world-of what these creatures and landscapes can communicate to us, and how they are all linked. The book is Silko's first extended work of nonfiction, and its ambitious scope, clear prose, and inventive structure are captivating. The Turquoise Ledge will delight loyal fans and new readers alike, and it marks the return of the unique voice and vision of a gifted storyteller.

This is so so important. There are several countries in the world, like included, that have a variety of different languages, but governments that insist on the primacy of just one language, which is ridiculous. A diversity of language is to be celebrated.

1.Not for now, but hoping to visit Arizona in October! Very excited!
2. For everyone to turn feminist, for all voters to reject populist fascists, for the 2000 year old caste system to be wiped out from the brain of every indian.

A meandering walk in the desert that is a beautiful reflection of the life lived in it. As I also live in the Sonoran Desert, I felt a deep connection to this book and am glad that I own it and can reread it anytime I forget why I live here in the heat. For a full review, please visit my blog:

Sometimes early in the morning when I walk the trail the air is cool & faintly scented with rain. Just before the sun rises over the mountains, incandescence floods over the bright greens of the mesquite leaves & jade greens of the tall saguaros. A breeze stirs & there is a silence as it might have been five hundred or a thousand years ago. No sound anywhere in the distance from a train, jet, car or even a dog. Here the desert is as it always was.

A weird personal connection to the author for me. My German Great-grandma was born in Los Lunas, NM. I actually gasped when I read this.

July has not been a good reading month. My second vaccine hit me HARD and I was out for several days. Then my brother went on vacation so I spent a week checking in on my mom every day. Just didn't have much reading time. Now I have 8 days to finish 4 books in order to stay on track. I can do it! I'm starting this memoir about living in the Sonoran desert tonight. I've had it for a few years, so I figured it was time to pick it up.

This unusual memoir is primarily a nonlinear meditation on the author‘s connection to nature. She does weave in her writing, painting, and Native American heritage, though to a small degree. She somehow makes it work, suffusing the narrative with a sense of place, which makes this perfect for #ReadingUSA2019 #Arizona.

DocBrown Striking cover. Reminds me of my 25 years there. 6y
JamieArc I love her fiction writing. When I spent a summer in Tucson I came across her address and was tempted to stalk her down. I didn‘t, and I‘m not sure if I regret that decision or not 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 6y
Hooked_on_books @JamieArc That would have made a great story if you had! I read this because I loved Ceremony. I was not disappointed. 6y

I actually saw this book here on Litsy and knew I needed to buy it, especially because it's about the beauty and symbolism of the Sonoran Desert and that's the place I call home. I find the desert to be a very spiritual place and can't wait to dig into this book. #indigenousauthors #junebookbugs
