The Good Left Undone
The Good Left Undone | Adriana Trigiani
27 posts | 18 read | 9 to read
Proud matriarch Matelda Cabrelli always has something to say. But, as she faces the end of her life, she worries she's failed to tell the stories that matter. Most of all, the story of her mother Domenica's two great loves. First, her childhood sweetheart- a boy from the same small coastal town of Viareggio. Second, a mysterious Captain- a passion forged in the midst of WW2 - the father Matelda never knew. Now, it falls to Matelda to tell Domenica's story. And for the Cabrelli women to unpick the mysteries, infatuations and tragedies that sent Domenica away from Italy - then brought her home again. . .

This may have sat with my unread #BOTM books for much longer if not for #Bookspin and #Booked2023. 3 generations of strong Italian women. I don‘t usually like WW2 novels but this took me to France, Scotland, and Italy so I couldn‘t resist. I also learned another side of the atrocities of WW2 from the Italian perspective. I still think about the Cabrelli women.

I enjoyed this book, but I felt it was really slow getting started. I also didn‘t expect for it to trigger thoughts of my own end of life. I enjoy the sense of community and family. I felt like the author truly understands what it means to be part of a family.

This is one of the first historical fiction books that I‘ve read from Italys perspective. Being of Italian decent, I found it exceptionally interesting, and hope to plan a trip to Tuscany at some point in the future. This books main theme is family. It goes back and forth between 3 generations of woman. It‘s only downfall is that it became confusing at times remembering which family member belonged to who. I really enjoyed this book.

This is a solid novel set during World War II and today. It follows 3 generations of women in an Italian family. Trigiani builds character connections, historical references, and family relationships. I loved Matelda, who is from the middle generation. Her memories teach the younger generations about her early life and her mother's experiences. We should all ask our grandparents about their youth before it's too late! #thebibliophage2022

This was a hard book to get invested in. I really liked the stories from the gma from when she was younger. Reading about the Italian POWs in WWI was so sad. It is a good book, about 3 stars for me.

This was a light pick. It was enjoyable enough, but went on a bit too long for my tastes.

The setting and timeline here fascinated me - Italy, France, and Scotland over 4 generations, and I enjoyed how it was told. To google I went to read about the sinking of the Arandora Star (quick but meaningful mention in the book) - fascinating and so sad.

Pretty good. A bit slow, but I love a multigenerational story! This is my first of this author. Is there a different one I should read? I'd like to spend more time in Italy!!

Hanna-B Im going to check this author out, I‘m obsessed by Italy atm 2y
Aims42 I loved this one, I read it several years ago and I still think about it 🥰 2y

I adore other books by the author and I‘m a fan of her descriptive writing style. She excels in setting a scene and describing artisanal work. As in Shoemaker‘s Daughter, she weaves details of a craft into her story—this time it is gem-cutting for jewelry. I love it! This book spans 3 generations of strong Italian women, and that is part of my problem, it jumps around from generation to generation and feels disjointed at times.

Bluebird I absolutely love parts of this book. I think with better editing this could have been great. As it is, i can only rate it ‘so-so‘. However, as a Trigiani fan, i‘m glad I stuck through to the end. 2y

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Domenica is a woman who knows her own mind despite social and religious pressures to conform - a trait she passes along to her daughter, Matilda. As Matilda‘s life comes to an end, the story of the Cabrelli family is shared with the younger generation, helping them understand how they came to be, who they are, and who they might become. Today was a difficult day. My students (I teach at the college-level. I say that bc I *feel* for those of you teaching in K-12) are struggling. On days like today, I‘m grateful for the turn in weather in Wisconsin (fleeting - it could snow tomorrow!), so I can apply a balm to the soul with a cheese board, a cocktail, a book, and a fire. May you all find a moment of peace this week.

Ruthiella Hope tomorrow is better. ❤️ 3y

A beautiful read and of course I teared up at the ending (Adriana‘s books always get me 🥺). I‘m glad I picked it for my #BOTM pick and didn‘t wait for my turn on my library‘s waitlist 😊

It‘s been a bookish sort of day. One got sent out, one got delivered, and one was bought strictly because it‘s been on my TBR list for a while and I had a moment of “why the heck not?”, even though I probably won‘t read it for a while. #bookofthemonth #april #botm

Happy #blueboxday #BOTM 🙌😍 I got Adriana Trigiani‘s newest book. I was way up there on my library‘s waitlist and I‘ve got a feeling I‘m going to LOVE this! I also got “Pachinko” by Min Jin Lee because I am a sucker for generational sagas (in case my previous pick didn‘t tell you 😆). AND I AM OFFICIALLY A BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB BFF #botmbff 🥳🍾🥂🙌 This tote bag is awesome, I will wear it with pride (and with a book always in its pocket 🤓)

vivastory The botm tote is one of my favorite totes. So sturdy & I love the extra pockets 3y
Aims42 @vivastory I‘m really surprised by how sturdy and roomy it is 🤯 I was imagining some 8” square tote suitable for carrying no more than 3 file folders in, but this is niiiiiiiiiiiiice👌 3y

I only choose one book this month from the selections. I need to read this and some from my #BOTMBacklog before I pick multiples.

I am hoping this book is as good as the reviews make it out to be. 🤞📖📚

Aims42 That‘s the one I picked this month too! Hoping it‘s good 🤞 3y

My April #botm. The tagged book has good reviews, and the add on had me at “feminism,” “dog,” and “historical fiction.”

My #botm selections. I was already planning to read The Good Left Undone, but the other two were not on my radar. The cover of Kaikeyi is gorgeous!

Not my favorite month, but my Aunt is a huge Trigiani fan so I was happy to "share the wealth" and snag this up for her ? Kaikeyi has gotten great reviews but retellings are a hit-or-miss for me, so I think I'll hold off for now.

Seems like alot of people weren't too thrilled with the selections, but I know Spring can be a slower publishing season when it comes to new releases! #botm

April #BOTM picks, ya'll! One of them, Lessons in Chemistry and Bomb Shelter, the memoir from my previous post, appear to be add-ons 😄

Personally, it might be a skip unless there are some compelling additional add-ons added to the mix 😬

Megabooks Yes!! I was hoping lessons in chemistry would be one!! 3y
Megabooks True biz sounds great too! Book of the month has been better for me this year. Thanks for the spoilers as always, Ashley! I thought this would be one 3y

swishandflick @Megabooks I wish Lessons in Chemistry was one of the main picks! That would definitely be mine. 3y
Megabooks I think I‘ll probably get true biz, lessons, and ladder to the sky for author a month. 👍🏻 3y
swishandflick @Megabooks Ooh, you're right. True Biz does sound great! 3y
Megabooks That cover is great too. Although I doubt anything will top Vladimir for me this year! 😂 3y
Breanne1 True Biz definitely seems intriguing!! 3y
jlhammar I am thrilled with these! True Biz and Lessons in Chemistry are going in my box for sure. Loved Sara Novic's last book, Girl at War. Already requested Bittersweet from the library. 3y
KatieDid927 Thanks for sharing! Definitely a skip month for me. 3y
Beachesnbooks thanks for sharing! i hadn't heard of True Biz before but it sounds really interesting. also interested in lessons in chemistry 3y
Jemgirl2014 I‘m sorry but I can‘t with these. 🤦🏾‍♀️Skipping. 3y
marleed I‘m now intrigued True Biz. It also seems experiencing this in print would be beneficial because of the ASL included. Thanks for the heads up! I was really hoping Memphis would be on the list, and was watching for The No-show as a possibility - my anticipated selections seldom make the list. 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think I‘ll skip this month 🥴 3y
Cinfhen Thanks so much for tagging & sleuthing 🙌🏻💕I‘m MOST curious about 3y
Cinfhen I wonder where/ what her inspiration for this story came from!! Sounds great 3y
Kangaj1 Lessons in Chemistry is amazing! 3y
jlhammar @swishandflick @Cinfhen @Megabooks @Breanne1 @Beachesnbooks @marleed I believe Sara Novic is deaf and is a deaf rights activist. Looks like an adaptation is already in the works.

marleed @jlhammar oh interesting. Funny, when I read the synopsis of the book, I was thinking it sounded like it could be adapted to screen. That got me wondering if it might be Reese Witherspoon‘s April pick - adaptable and written by a woman. Well, now that answer is no since it‘s already in the works by someone else! 3y
Kitta How do you know beforehand!? This is an interesting mix of things but I might skip. I have a huge backlog of BOTM to read already. 3y
