In this queer, paranormal YA graphic novel debut from the author of Some Girls Do and the illustrator of Wonder Woman: Warbringer, a young witch races to solve the grisly supernatural murders of her coven members before the killer strikes again. Emsy has always lived in sunny California, and she’d much rather spend her days surfing with her friends or hanging out with her girlfriend than honing her powers as a fire elemental. But when members of her family’s coven back east are murdered under mysterious circumstances that can only be the result of powerful witchcraft, her family must suddenly return to dreary upstate New York. There, Emsy will have to master her neglected craft in order to find the killer . . . before her family becomes their next target.

Emsy is forced to move to New York with her parents after a mysterious murder in their old coven caused by witchcraft. She has been raised away from magic and doesn't know how to control her powers. But now she must help her grieving 'cousin' find the killer of his family before hers is the next target.
Soft pick. I really liked the concept but more could have been explained better. Characters weren't the most likeable. Great queer rep

Library haul! Nonfiction and a graphic novel. Looks like the witch trend is still going strong

Emsy is a fire witch & is being forced to move across the country from her friends and girlfriend. She goes back to NY from CA bc her childhood bestie‘s whole family was just killed. Everyone is witch, most of the MC‘s are queer. loved the color palette and art style of this graphic novel, story development and pacing was pretty good today. villain is the villain bc of the with group born into, not my fave trope but they were pretty villainous

I've been down and out with a gastro bug the past couple of days and I needed something to read that would keep my attention without requiring too much thought. Coven fit the bill!! I loved the color palette and illustrations in this graphic novel and the story of teenage found (witch) family was interesting. I also really liked that it kept both my attention as an adult and my 11 year old was able to enjoy it as well.

3.5 stars-
I enjoyed this book, though one of the MCs was whiny for the first 1/2 of the book, which was annoying. But it was a good story and not highly predictable.

Emsy is dragged across the country by her witch parents when other members of their coven are killed. I liked the resolution to the mystery (of who did it) very much, but not the rest of the ending, and a lot of the story was frustrating. It rested primarily on no one telling anyone else—especially Emsy—anything. Also, I‘m not into the thing where people are judged evil for falling into a particular category when they couldn‘t choose the category.

Clare-Dragonfly The artwork is great though! Points for that and for queer rep. 2y

Everything about this book was fantastic! The queer rep in the book really elevated the overall quality, and I loved that it was normalized within Emsy‘s family and coven. Similarly, the friendships that Emsy developed were complex, personal, and inviting. Finally, the illustrations in this novel were what really made it stand out. Every now and then there would be a drawing that was simply breathtaking, and gave me chills.
