This book explored some interesting ideas around language and speculative / dystopia (like the disappearance of Japan, a key aspect) which I expected to enjoy. And I did to some extent, but a lot of the story seemed to go in circles. What really killed it for me, though, is that a character was repeatedly misgendered. A couple of racial slurs were also thrown around. Overall unfortunate for a book I was excited to read.

What a truly unique reading experience! I am not entirely sure how to review this and give it the credit it deserves, which is ironic because this quiet dystopian novel is based on language, and I seem to be lacking in words.

Tawada gives the reader multiple characters and POV's which makes this a quirky, eclectic story that I absolutely loved.

I love this boooooook! It‘s a “cheerful dystopia” and it‘s hilarious and wonderful and that finale was an absolute delight.
