Prague Winter
Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 | Madeleine Albright
A remarkable story of adventure and passion, tragedy and courage set against the backdrop of occupied Czechoslovakia and World War II. Vclav Havel From former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright comes a moving and thoughtful memoir of her formative years in Czechoslovakia during the tumult of Nazi occupation, World War II, fascism, and the onset of the Cold War. An intensely personal journey into the past that offers vital lessons for the future, Prague Winter combines the intimacy of an autobiography with the drama of an exciting and well-told storyall underpinned by the gravity and intelligence of a serious work of history. The result is a highly readable and incisive work filled with tragedy and triumph, a resonant narrative informed by Albrights remarkable life experience and her characteristic candor in speaking hard truths.

Book #26 of the year: ”Prague Winter” by Madeleine Albright

I really enjoyed this book. Well researched and full of primary sources, including many the average person wouldn‘t have access to. I loved the deep dive into Czech and Czechoslovak history and politics, the complexities of interactions between Churchill, Hitler, Stalin, and Benes, and the personal touch added by Albright‘s lived experiences.

This is not a story about an extraordinary life. It‘s about an ordinary life during an extraordinary event: the Holocaust. Because Albright didn‘t learn how her family was affected by the war until she was middle aged, this has neither that explanatory nor nostalgic feel of a memoir. Instead it‘s captivating to follow her discovery of her past and her simultaneous musings about it. Read it & the name “Bohemia” will mean so much more to you.

The best non-fiction book about WWII I have ever read. Madeleine Albright (US Ambassador to the UN, Secretary of State) was from Czechoslovakia and her father worked in the govt before, during, and after WWII. This book explains the unfolding and tragedy of WWII from the Czech perspective— a country betrayed by the Allies and forgotten by modern historians— and explores political decisions made in dire circumstances. 10/10 read ⭐️🇨🇿

44/52-🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5! This is an outstanding book that document historical events that took place during World War II, as well as sharing Dr Madeline Albright‘s family history. She is a brilliant writer and thinker. Above is the last paragraph of the book and I highly recommend reading it!

74% read of this 731 page book! I started it in late April and put it down after 350pages, but today should be the day to finish it! It is a wonderful book about a time in history that is terribly sad, but the stories need to be told and never forgotten.

Dr. Madeline Albright, former Secretary of State, got a D- in geography in 1st grade!!! She improved to a B. I would say she has improved to an AAAAA+ over the years.

Reading this book makes me sad and angry. It is very informative and I wish more people would explore the atrocities of the past, so we don‘t repeat history - but we are repeating it right next now. The media is not the enemy of the state!

I am learning a lot from this well-written book, but I was shocked last night when I realized it was 750 pages. When I downloaded it, clearly I did not pay attention. It may take me another month to finish it, but I won‘t give up. Being a slow reader really sucks!

Notafraidofwords I‘m a slow reader too 7y
MayJasper Me too. I marvel at those who race through twenty or more books a month. But I can only go at my own pace 7y
Tjackson @Notafraidofwords Thanks for sharing. It is good to know I am not the only one. 😀😀😀 7y
Tjackson @MayJasper Thanks! I am determined to read 52 books this year, but that means a lot time because of my slow pace. I think the slowness helps me savor it more. No way I could read 20 in a month unless we are talking pictures books.😀😀😀 7y

I started reading this book over a month ago and got distracted by 10 other books, so I back here. I am determined to finish reading it this week. Dr. Albright is an amazingly talented historian!!!

jpmcwisemorgan I have quite a few books I‘ve started and not finished and I need to get back to them! I can‘t help that there are so many books to read and I want to read them all right now. 7y
Tjackson @jpmcwisemorgan I do this all the time, but I am trying to get better at finishing each of them. 7y
Tjackson @jpmcwisemorgan I just realized why I took a break from this book....it is 750 pages!! I have read 270 pages so far. I may have to take another break. 7y

I am learning a lot more about WWII and it is from a different perspective. So happy the size of the book (750 pages) didn‘t intimidate me.

I typically do not read books about war, but I am finding this one to be very informative and straight forward. I am learning so details about the war that I haven‘t encountered and I want to follow up by reading some biographies. 164 pages done - 750 pages total!

Madeline Albright is gifted in many ways. I selected this book because it is about Prague and I am visiting Prague in November. I am learning so much from each page. Her writing style is perfect for me. Only 600 more pages to go in the 750 page book!!!

In December 2017, made my first trip to Shakespeare and Sons Bookstore and Cafe in Prague! I loved it and cannot wait to visit again this year. I picked up two books (although I wanted many more) and met another wanderer from the states while browsing the stacks. I have long admired Secretary Albright and cannot wait to read this book!

TheAnitaAlvarez Love that bookshop! I run into it while getting to the Kafka museum and stayed there for hours looking for books I wanted 7y
MsLeah8417 Me, too! I am fortunate to have family in Praha so I was given a book from the shop during their visit with me last March and then was taken there almost directly after arriving there in December. 😊 I cannot wait to go back to visit again in 2018 and this time I hope to sit and have tea and sit for a couple@of hours. 7y

A little audio listening, as my annoying migraine is making a reappearance. Madeleine Albright, former ambassador to the UN,first discovered her Jewish identity at the age of 59, when a newspaper reporter broke the story. This is her recounting of her years growing up in Prague, when Hitler came to power. It's fascinating (at times dry) #popsugar ~a book with 4 seasons in the title #LRC13 & #BWB #historicalevent #readharder ~ book about war
