The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post
The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post: A Novel | Allison Pataki
10 posts | 14 read | 12 to read
This marvelous novel kept me up way past my bedtime. I just had to be there with the Post cereal heiress through every twist and turn.Martha Hall Kelly, New York Times bestselling author of Lilac Girls Allison Pataki takes the reader on a luxurious ride filled with jet-setting locales and opulent mansions, while deftly revealing how Marjorie Posts humble beginnings fed her desire to become a new kind of heiress, forging her own way through the world and keenly aware of her legacy.Fiona Davis, New York Timesbestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue Mrs. Post, the President and First Lady are here to see you. . . . So begins another average evening for Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presidents have come and gone, but she has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hardeven when deemed American royalty, even while covered in imperial diamonds. Marjorie had an insatiable drive to live and love and to give more than she got. From crawling through Moscow warehouses to rescue the Tsars treasures to outrunning the Nazis in London, from serving the homeless of the Great Depression to entertaining Roosevelts, Kennedys, and Hollywoods biggest stars, Marjorie Merriweather Post lived an epic life few could imagine. Marjories journey began gluing cereal boxes in her fathers barn as a young girl. No one could have predicted that C. W. Posts Cereal Company would grow into the General Foods empire and reshape the American way of life, with Marjorie as its heiress and leading lady. Not content to stay in her prescribed roles of high-society wife, mother, and hostess, Marjorie dared to demand more, making history in the process. Before turning thirty she amassed millions, becoming the wealthiest woman in the United States. But it was her life-force, advocacy, passion, and adventurous spirit that led to her stunning legacy. And yet Marjories story, though full of beauty and grandeur, set in the palatial homes she built such as Mar-a-Lago, was equally marked by challenge and tumult. A wife four times over, Marjorie sought her happily-ever-after with the blue-blooded party boy who could not outrun his demons, the charismatic financier whose charm turned to betrayal, the international diplomat with a dark side, and the bon vivant whose shocking secrets would shake Marjorie and all of society. Marjorie did everything on a grand scale, especially when it came to love. Bestselling and acclaimed author Allison Pataki has crafted an intimate portrait of a larger-than-life woman, a powerful story of one woman falling in love with her own voice and embracing her own power while shaping history in the process.

I enjoyed this fictionalized telling of Marjorie Post‘s life. Starting with her time in Battle Creek when her father was visiting the Kellogg sanitarium through her marriages, and travels, and family struggles. A tidbit that I was not aware of, there were several, that struck me was she built Mara-Lago 😲
4 ⭐️ recommended you love a strong woman and historical fiction.

Mehso-so

My book club gets together this weekend to discuss this one— my second experience with the author‘s writing! I really didn‘t know much of anything about the life of Marjorie Merriweather Post going in, I did enjoy this view of her life. The cereal heiress and wealthy women hits some discordant notes throughout- vacillating between savvy and naive, generous and completely self-absorbed. I just wish there was more to really bring her to life here!

This was more so-so for me than a pick but it was well written and descriptive and does make me want to read a non-fiction book about Post's life. She's a big figure out here on Long Island so I'm curious about her. She was quite charitable but there's something about her that I didn't like. She had some pretty bad luck with men, that's for sure!!!

4⭐️ I quite liked this book. I have known about her property in Palm Beach and as I read the book, I was quite surprised at what an amazing woman she must have been. I wish she had had a husband who was better suited for her. #2022 #bookreview #bookstagram #historicalfiction #fiction #basedonatruestory #wwi #greatdepression #wwii

I visited the Hillwood Estate in Washington D.C., the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post. A fascinating woman, I had planned to read this new book. There was a signed copy in the gift shop and it came home with me. The Sevres Porcelain Book was a surprise. It was a gift when purchasing a book! If you are in the area, I encourage you to visit. It is magnificent! Also currently, there is an exhibit of Grace Kelly and Dior!

Bookwormjillk I work right up the street from there but have never visited. How was it? 2y
DivineDiana @Bookwormjillk It is amazing! So much to see! A docent tour for the garden and a docent tour for the mansion is the way to go! Lovely cafe also! It is a treasure! I am in Philadelphia and it was definitely worth the drive! 2y
