I finished this library book last night and it was really good ... A real gem of a book. It's very me - a good gothic drama with a twist that I didn't see coming 👍

This is a mystery/thriller set in England at the end of WWI. Ivy's son has died in the war under strange circumstances she wants to find out what happened. Then, a man comes back into Ivy's life with whom she was close to back in 1888. The second timeline occurs in that time, and we find out what happened at Polneath House and how it affects Ivy in her present day. It's very intriguing and twisty.
Happy Birthday, birthday twin! @Cathythoughts 🎉📚🎈
Thank you for this wonderful gift. 😘😘
Love the book. It's been on my radar and I'm looking forward to reading it.
This is an eerie and beautifully written story. It is something of a slow burner but I found it very compelling even so. It really draws you in to its murky depths! It‘s quite a dark tale and very atmospheric with some sinister overtones. It has a good sense of time and place. There is a great cast of fascinating characters, not always particularly likeable. An intriguing and absorbing mystery which had me gripped until the last page.
The story is told in two timelines, 1888 when Ivy is a nineteen-year-old & 1918/9 following the end of WWI. The writing itself is very well done, the story unfolds beautifully, but I found it difficult to like Ivy. I found her obsession with Edward a bit too much, & it was obvious which way the story was going to go. I think a fair rating is 3.5🌟
My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Penguin UK/Viking, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
