Day 18. With Dog

This was a case where I saw the movie before reading the book. I read this in January and still think about it every now and then.

Two brothers, Phil and George Burbank run a successful cattle ranch. Phil is book smart and mean. George is quiet and kind hearted. When a widow and her son come into their lives, it changes everything. I found this to be a compelling psychological drama. The ending sneaks up on you because you‘re so busy dreading other things that are happening in the story. Or at least, that was my experience 😂 Highly recommend!

This is an incredibly well-written book that clearly portrays the Montana ranch setting and characters. It‘s also not an enjoyable story as it spends a lot of time in Phil‘s thoughts. I listened to it slowly over the past week, just a chapter or so at a time because of that. Throughout the book, the pride in not wearing gloves and brushing off any small injury resonated strongly with my own family farm experience.

Daisey @TheAromaofBooks This is also my book 10 for February #DoubleSpin. 3y

I‘m reading this with building dread. I do not like Phil 🥺

I did get a flashback today when Montgomery Wards Department Store was called “Monkey“ Wards. I hadn‘t heard that in decades – of course the store has s been closed for decades as well!

Suet624 I can imagine. The film does the same thing but the acting And scenery is quite beautiful 3y
tpixie @Suet624 I‘ve decided if this book can pull on my emotions so, it must be well written. I bet the scenery is beautiful! 3y

Well. I loved this. Lures you in so you think you know where its going and then BAM it all changes in the blink of an eye. So much so I thought I'd missed a chapter. Really looking forward to watching the film now.

Tamra The film is gorgeous and doesn‘t pander to the audience by dumbing the story down. At least from what I can remember from the book - I read it so long ago! 3y

Mehso-so

I read this after it had been sitting on my kindle for years because I heard Jane Campion was making a movie of it, and the book was… fine, but I got the impression from reading it that it‘ll make an incredible film so I‘m glad I gave it a go. For a book that was all atmosphere and no plot, I‘d have liked a bit more atmosphere, but i think a good director can do an awful lot with it so I‘m excited for that!
