The subject matter this bears witness to is difficult, but the writing style is strong and straightforward. My favorite thing about this is it‘s not couched in beauty or grace or sweetness. You can tell the author is writing for herself, so she‘s unapologetic about telling her truth.

By turns beautiful and heart-rendering this is easily one of the most moving poetry collections I have ever read. The collection is so so well crafted too. In these poems, Warsan Shire gives snapshots of moments in the lives of refugees and immigrants, especially the experiences of women and girls from Somalia. Highly recommend. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Whoops this doesn't come out until March but you will want this poetry collection. You think you don't recognize the poet's name but most of the words in Beyonce's Lemonade were penned by Warsan Shire.

Poems in this collection range from the refugee experience to the body to love. She's also well known for the poem "Home," which can be found online and starts with this line:
"no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark"

ReadingEnvy Shire is British, born to Somali parents in Kenya, so many of her poems ponder belonging and place.
