From "New York Times" bestselling author John Lescroart, a riveting standalone novel about the unexpected, shattering, and lethal consequences of a one-night stand on a seemingly happily married couple. Kate loves her life. At forty-four, she s happily married to her kind husband, Ron, blessed with two wonderful children, and has a beautiful home in San Francisco. Everything changes, however, when she and Ron attend a dinner party and meet another couple, Peter and Jill. Kate and Peter only exchange a few pleasant words but that night, in bed with her husband, Kate is suddenly overcome with a burning desire for Peter. What begins as an innocent crush soon develops into a dangerous obsession and Kate s fixation on Peter results in one intense, passionate encounter between the two. Confident that her life can now go back to normal, Kate never considers that Peter may not be so willing to move on. Not long after their affair, a masked man barges into the cafe Kate is sitting in with her best friend, firing an assault weapon indiscriminately into the crowd. This tragedy is the first in a series of horrifying events that will show Kate just how grave the consequences of one mistake can be. An explosive story of infidelity, danger, and moral ambiguity, John Lescroart s latest thriller will excite and satisfy both his current and new fans."

Mehso-so

My first time reading this author. I think he tried to do too much: police procedural, whodunit, friendship drama, family drama... it did not come together so well. Not bad, but an unsatisfying ending. I'm surprised Beth and Kate didn't know each other better (they were "best friends"). I remember 7 accounts of women in footwear and 5 of them were hiking boots, which bothered me (see my previous post). Meh.

Zelma Excellent final tally of hiking boots. 👍 7y
No_One @Zelma 😂😂😂😂. I only just saw this message! I‘m glad you appreciated my effort. Have a relaxing weekend in your boots! 😃 7y

These are my hiking boots. They are not clean, nor particularly comfortable, unless I am actually hiking. They are stiff, to prevent my ankles from rolling. The thick soles help keep my feet from feeling rocks. They are clunky.

The author has one woman slipping on hiking boots before putting her feet up to relax, and one is wearing hiking boots with yoga pants (!) while studying. Um, no. So ridiculous.

It‘s bugging me SO MUCH.

claffy_reads This made me laugh out loud. I've been lounging around all day and couldn't figure out why I want getting really comfortable... I must need my hiking boots!!! 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 7y
Zelma That is so specific and odd on the author‘s part. Apparently he has a thing for hiking boots. 😬 7y
LeahBergen This is crazy. 😂😂 7y

PandaPanda Also that line that she wasn't wearing makeup because her "pretty face doesn't need it". ? 7y
merelybookish Maybe he mixed up Uggs and Hiking boots? 7y
No_One @callielafleur haha, give it a try and let me know if it works? 7y
No_One @Zelma I know, right? So weird. The setting is San Francisco, maybe all women wear hiking boots there. 😕 7y
No_One @LeahBergen 😆😆 glad I‘m not the only one who thinks so! 7y
No_One @PandaPanda ugh, I know!! 😖 7y
No_One @merelybookish there is a third woman who puts on hiking boots to walk to her office on a Saturday. So I don‘t think so. Anyway, as an author I‘d hope he wouldn‘t make that kind of mistake! 😕 7y
merelybookish @No_One He clearly doesn't understand footwear! 7y
No_One @merelybookish 😄 well, not women‘s footwear! That‘s a lot of hiking boots for one book! 🙂 7y
LeahBergen I think he has a hiking boot fetish. Just you wait ... the next scene is going to be a naked woman in hiking boots. 😆 @callielafleur @Zelma @merelybookish 7y
CherryPie Reminds me of Carrie criticizing Berger for the scrunchie. Except hair scrunchies are awesome! I only own combat boots -- no hikers. 7y
No_One @LeahBergen hahaha! I really hope not! 😆😆 I am only 40 pages from the end. I hope no more boot appear. 7y
No_One @CherryPie oh yeah!!! I remember that! But a scrunchie in NY is slightly more believable, I think. And they are awesome - the only hair tie that never pulled my hair. 😄 7y
CherryPie I'm rooting for more boot appearances. Keep us updated. 😀👍 7y
No_One @CherryPie haha, you got it! 7y
Bry 🙃 I actually had to read the first couple paragraphs twice. I thought I must be missing something in the sequence of events. She puts on the hiking boots and THEN blow-dries her hair and THEN relaxes??? 7y
No_One @Bry HAHAHAHA!!! YES!! Hiking boots are sooooooo relaxing. #sorryNowI'mMondayDrunk 7y
Zelma I don‘t know about all of you but I am having the lost relaxing evening in my pajamas and hiking boots. 😜 7y
No_One @Zelma 🤣🤣🤣. Oh yeah? I wore mine to bed and had the best sleep, ever! 7y
Zelma @No_One I‘m never asking mine off. 😂 7y
No_One @Zelma 😂😂😂 you don‘t have to! They are the ultimate indoor/outdoor footwear. 😂😂😂 7y

Hmmmm, I am at the end of Part 1, and I want to predict what will happen (based on the review excerpts at the beginning of the book).

1. I predict Kate fakes her death at the Ferry Building and runs away.
2. I predict Peter sees her somewhere and Kate kills him in order to avoid being caught. (My paperback back cover says he gets killed).

That's it. No more predictions. I am chickening out after two. 😆😆

No_One I was so wrong with my predictions!!! 😆😆😆 7y

I didn't care for this book. Very long and drawn out. Kept at it hoping the ending would be good. Alas, this was not the case. 😥Still love the author and will read him again!

The moment you open the new book by one of your favorite authors and realize it's not the next in your wonderful series. But the villainous stand alone novel that they mistakenly thought you'd want to read instead. And read it I will and fabulous it will be. But oh how I miss you Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky!!!😩😥🤧😭

It is hard reading something you know will sell a bunch of copies, but just isn't connecting. This was the case w/Fatal for me. A woman sleeps with a man and is best friends w/a cop. The man is partners with her husband and both are Desert Storm vets along w/a third partner. The man gets stalkery and one day a terrorist attack happens. Weeks later (after all survive), the man washes dead upon the shore. The cop must investigate.

NerdyRev The book was all over the place, for me, and I knew the ending thanks to a speech in the beginning. I just wanted the book to end at one point. Hard to recommend, but it will sell due to his name. Be sure to catch it at airports everywhere! 8y

I am 70% done with this book and I am to the point I just want this to end. It is sort of a hot mess, yet kind of interesting too. It is one that just feels long though. Because it is a review book, I will power on.

SusanInTiburon Sounds like Fatal Attraction. 8y
NerdyRev @SusanInTiburon There are elements of it, except male stalker to female and a terrorist attack happens in the middle. Yes, really. 8y

You know that moment that you are reading about a woman who cheats on her husband with a man cheating on his wife, when he gets all obsessive and stalkery and then terrorists blow up a building. I didn't until this book. My reaction was- Wait? What!?! Well, that was different.
