Betrayal on the Bowery
Betrayal on the Bowery: A Gilded Gotham Mystery | Kate Belli
4 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
In Gilded-Age New York, not all that glitters is gold in a chilling murder mystery that careens from the city's poshest sanctuaries to its meanest streets. New York City, summer 1889. Society girl-turned-investigative journalist Genevieve Stewart and wealthy Daniel McCaffrey have arrived at the docks to see their friends, Rupert and Esmie Milton, off on their honeymoon. But the romantic idyll comes to a screeching halt when a crazed man bursts into their stateroom screaming about demons and drops dead before their eyes. The dead man is Marcus Dalrymple, who had once asked Esmie to marry him--and inside Marcus's pocket, Daniel finds a medallion that they trace to a Lower East Side bar called Boyle's Suicide Tavern. The medallions are prizes given to anyone who spends the night there without dying. Clearly, a visit to Boyle's could prove hazardous, but it may offer the only clue to Dalrymple's death. Genevieve and Daniel barely escape the bar with their lives butlearn that the crime could have a connection to the recent disappearance of a sugar baron's daughter. Only after another young man plunges to his death from a rooftop bar--also screaming about demons--do the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together. The clues lead Genevieve and Daniel far from the city's moneyed environs to a reputedly haunted mansion deep in the Bronx. There, they will confront the truth--and the demon at its heart.

I didn‘t really remember what happened in the first book. So I‘m glad they went over some things to jog my memory.

This one was good. I wasn‘t expecting who the puppet master was at the end.

However, it was very repetitive at some points. Like I get it, Genevieve is tall. You don‘t have to remind me every time she is doing something. I get she is taller than most people.

In looking back at the first in this series (this is 2nd), my review could read almost exactly like that one. 😄 Genevieve‘s family is part of the famed 400 upperclass of 1880s NYC. She is the society reporter for a newspaper and is a headstrong, determined woman. She and her close group of friends (and love interest) are pulled into two interwoven mysteries (3 possible murders and a kidnapping). There are “demons”, hidden tunnels, smuggling, 🔻

robinb revolutionaries, gangsters and more involved here. But while there‘s a lot thrown in, I still found it slow in places and was irritated by some of the characters on occasion. It was fine, but I have read better. So just an OK for me but would be willing to give the next one a try. 3.5/5⭐️ 3y

The story picks up right where book 1, Deception by Gaslight, ended. It‘s New York in 1889, Daniel and Genevieve are thrown together to investigate the kidnapping of a debutante and are also working on solving the murder of two young society gentlemen. There is a haunted mansion, very dark places, and a connection to Daniel‘s past.

This had a wild chase filled with mystery and deception! The plot just drew me in and the setting was so detailed that I felt like I had firsthand experience with the location. I definitely want to mention that there were many twists and turns that embroiled one character after another in a tale that has its share of wickedness right along with sweetness. Also, there were such well developed and colorful characters, this story was just charming.
