Abyss Surrounds Us
Abyss Surrounds Us | Emily Skrutskie
For Cassandra Leung, bossing around sea monsters is just the family business. She's been a Reckoner trainer-in-training ever since she could walk, raising the giant, genetically engineered beasts to defend ships as they cross the pirate-infested NeoPacific. But when the pirate queen Santa Elena swoops in on Cas's first solo mission and snatches her from the bloodstained decks, Cas's dream of being a full-time trainer seems dead in the water. Waiting for her on the pirate ship is an unhatched Reckoner pup. Santa Elena wants to take back the seas with a monster of her own, and she needs a proper trainer to do it. She orders Cas to raise the pup and teach him to fight for the pirates. If Cas fails, her blood will be the next to paint the sea. Praise: "[A] fresh and fascinating look at a lawless future." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Skrutskie adeptly creates a fantastical world of ruthless pirates; lovable, deadly creatures; and dynamic characters."--School Library Journal "This is a solid, well-crafted, new adventure story with an interesting, unusual hook."--Booklist "Skrutskie creates an intriguing fantasy world full of floating cities, ruthless monsters, betrayals, and unlikely friendships."--Publishers Weekly "The Abyss Surrounds Us is richly drawn, a science-fiction universe with its own set of laws and customs."--ForeWord Reviews "This futuristic novel is a true pleasure to read."--VOYA "The Abyss Surrounds Us is highly original and addictive."--SLJTeen

It's a little lacking in depth -- Cas' evolution from her attitude at the start to the end makes sense but feels so fast -- but I found myself reading it all in one fell swoop. I did enjoy the ambiguousness/ambivalence of the relationship between Cas and Swift.

The concept is sound and the writing is good. Love sea monsters! Both this book and the sequel are short in length, really should have been one book. Like a lot of novelettes, the romantic elements and the resolution felt rushed.

Beach read #1. Fabulous. I loved this book and couldn't put it down! The story was fast paced and really well constructed. I love the characters and can't wait to read the sequel

vanesdigregorio Ooooh! I've been eyeing this book for some time - sounds like I need to pick it up! 7y

Happy #toptentuesday! This week (since we're on hiatus), I decided to flash way back to the topic Books I Can't Believe I Haven't Read Yet. Most of these are pretty new, but I still can't believe i haven't read them yet. Soon soon soon!

This book is totally cool with animal abuse, with saying that poor people steal and it's ok because they are poor and with a main character who abandons her family and her responsibilities because she found lust with a pirate girl. Ok writing, horrible character development and an interesting world. Read if you like "everyone has a heart of darkness" stories and appreciate apocalyptic words with no sense of apocalypse. 1.5/5 stars

I bailed on this because it triggered me. I read about 35% of it. The story was great and so were the characters. I wish I could have finished it.

I wish we could post gifs here. I need one to express the pain I was in reading chapter three. I don't want to give it away, but good God, I was so sad. I'm guessing the horrors are just beginning.

Finished my re-read of this book last night, and just like the first time really really loved it. Honestly the best pitch I've heard for it is "it's about gay girls, pirates in the future, and sea monsters". Who does not what to read a book like that?! It's got it all!

Katherself That's a great pitch! Definitely adding it to my stack. 8y

And very enjoyable it was too. Just what I needed on an otherwise crappy day!

"Reckoners aren't meant to be aggressive creatures. They only become aggressive if triggered by an attack. It's right there in the name. They're the reckoning that comes crashing down on anyone who attacks their imprint ship, the retribution that deters attacks in the first place." (168)

One of the best books I've read in 2016; hands down a glorious fucking piece of imaginative literature.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Anything less than that rating would be a disrespect. Cannot wait for book #2 next year!!!

Spending my Weds today reading ALL DAY LONG! I've been so busy w/ family & holiday stuff that I haven't gotten to read much at all. So, gonna pamper myself w/ imagination. Cat Squad & a pot of chai included at no extra cost. Woot! I'm enjoying both novels, esp. Abyss. The manga's new, but been on my TBR forever. Hopefully I can tackle 'em all. 📚🖖🏽📖

My 1st book in the #DiverseDecBingo challenge, and I'm very happy that I will finally be reading this! The gorgeous cover with all of its amazing praise across book blogs has had me in anticipatory mode since I bought it. 😍

Today's library haul. I'm having trouble finishing any one book right now (post election funk); I've been picking up books and then losing interest and trying others. Which of these should I try next? #ya #queerlit #dystopian #booksintranslation

A photo challenge called for water-themed books and I immediately pulled these from my shelves (and the background from my closet).
The Abyss Surrounds Us is one of my top picks for YA sci fi (genetically altered sea monsters and lesbian pirates!) and Lagoon is (regrettably) TBR.

This is a summer blockbuster in book form.

It's flashy and filled with sea monsters and pirates set in a sort of near-future based earth. There's a great slow burn romance and a main character I could get behind. It's entertainment and fun. I look forward to reading the next one.

While the world building was average at best, the action was well written and the main character believable. So here for same sex romances in fantasy books, and this one was great! From a hate to love relationship, and so well done! 4 stars

A wonderful debut novel! It was action-packed, had a great cast of characters and the romance was pretty awesome too. I highly recommend it for fans of Pacific Rim and/or pirates. ✨🐲⚓️
