The Unkindness of Ravens
The Unkindness of Ravens: A Greer Hogan Mystery | M. E. Hilliard
11 posts | 8 read | 13 to read
Librarian Greer Hogan matches wits with a deviously clever killer in M.E. Hilliard's chilling series debut, ideal for fans of Louise Penny and Dorothy L. Sayers. Greer Hogan is a librarian and an avid reader of murder mysteries. She also has a habit of stumbling upon murdered bodies. The first was her husband's, and the tragic loss led Greer to leave New York behind for a new start in the Village of Raven Hill. But her new home becomes less idyllic when she discovers her best friend sprawled dead on the floor of the library. Was her friend's demise related to two other deaths that the police deemed accidental? Do the residents of this insular village hold dark secrets about another murder, decades ago? Does a serial killer haunt Raven Hill? As the body count rises, Greer's anxious musings take a darker turn when she uncovers unexpected and distressing information about her own husband's death...and the man who went to prison for his murder . She is racked with guilt at the possibility that her testimony may have helped to convict an innocent man. Though Greer admires the masters of deduction she reads about in books, she never expected to have to solve a mystery herself. Fortunately, she possesses a quick wit and a librarian's natural resourcefulness. But will that be enough to protect her from a brilliant, diabolical murderer? And even if Greer manages to catch the Raven Hill killer, will living with her conscience prove a fate worse than death?

I really enjoyed this! A solid debut and I liked how I was able to follow along and even guess whodunnit, without feeling over my head. The setting was so creepy and enchanting and I loved the small town atmosphere. Plus the main character is a librarian and there were a lot of moments that were realistic to my job. (Not so much the murder-solving, but the stacks of Publishers Weekly on our desks!)

Love this new series. Greer Hogan has left her old life and a traumatic loss behind. Now she is settling in as a small town librarian, but even small towns have secrets. When Greer discovers a body at the library she sets aside her role as a book pimp to channel Trixie Belden and follow the clues to solve the murder. I like the balance of darkness and light in the plot and the protagonist is relatable. A 4 ⭐️ pick. Ready for #2.

I enjoyed this one fairly well! (The first person narrative gave the impression that the main character was a little self-absorbed, but maybe that was just my reaction). Overall, a clever mystery in an excellent setting. Its obviously appealing to librarians and book nerds, but if you love mysteries, libraries and book references this is the book for you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

" I spent much of my time in charge of the reading room, sitting at the reference desk, answering questions and pimping books to readers looking for something novel." ???

I've never thought of myself as a book pimp before, but I think that's how I'd like to be thought of from now on! ??? #librariansoflitsy #librarylove

GondorGirl Well, now I'm picturing librarians wearing oversized fur coats and carrying ornate handled canes. 🤣🤣 3y
Branwen @GondorGirl I'm TOTALLY going to trade in my cardigan for one of those canes! 😁👏👏👏 3y

#currentlyreading the first in the #GreerHogan #cozymystery series, featuring small-town librarian Greer investigating a murder in her gothic mansion public library.

UPDATE: I enjoyed it, especially all the mentions of detective fiction and fictional detectives, including #TrixieBelden!

I just got off work and am starting this for some relaxing reading. Greer Hogan — new librarian and Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden fan — stumbles across a dead body in the library. Of course, she‘s ready to investigate.

I really enjoyed following Greer, a librarian who turns detective when a body falls at her feet (more like Trixie Belden than Nancy Drew) Hilliard drops book titles and authors, as well as quotes, among the clues which made it a lot of fun. When she talked about Friday closings when patrons are running in at the last moment for DVDs or how spooky it is when you are in the building alone when it‘s dark after closing, I could relate. 👍

Set in an old, creaky, slightly spooky library in upstate New York, new librarian Greer Hogan stumbles across the body of a friend. As she works to find the murderer, Greer encounters danger and old family secrets.
