Blackout | Simon Scarrow

"As Germany goes to war, the Nazis tighten their terrifying grip. Paranoia in the capital is intensified by a rigidly enforced blackout that plunges the city into oppressive darkness every night, as the bleak winter sun sets. When a young woman is found brutally murdered, Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke is under immense pressure to solve the case, swiftly. Treated with suspicion by his superiors for his failure to join the Nazi Party, Schenke walks a perilous line - for disloyalty is a death sentence. The discovery of a second victim confirms Schenke's worst fears. He must uncover the truth before evil strikes again. As the investigation takes him closer to the sinister heart of the regime, Schenke realises there is danger everywhere - and the warring factions of the Reich can be as deadly as a killer stalking the streets . . ."--Publisher.

#Adventrecommeds #Day2 January Book 2

This was one of my favourite books of the year, a crime drama set against the backdrop of Nazi Germany in 1939. I love it when you go into a book not knowing what to expect and fall totally in love with it.

Enjoyed this - murder mystery set in 1939 Berlin. The paranoia of trying to work in Berlin and not be in the party at that time is an underlying theme. Good twist for the killer. A good read.

Oh my, if you haven't read Simon Scarrow add him to your list of authors to try. This book had historical fiction (✓), murder(✓), mystery (✓), serial killer(✓) and I was not expecting it to be the person it was. It's set during WWII, in Berlin. Kripo Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke has been picked by the Gastpo to be lead on a case. Only thing, he doesn't know why they picked him. He's not a party member. Hope this becomes a series.

TrishB Have this on the pile 👍🏻 3y

#Blackout #SimonScarrow #MarvellousMarch #BookSpinBingo

It‘s 1939 and brutally cold in Berlin and a serial killer is stalking women. The Third Reich has forced nightly blackouts and Germany has crushed Poland. Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke of Berlin's Kripo has been chosen to solve the murder of Gerda Korzeny, a film star and once lover of Josef Goebbels.. Schenke's views of The Fuhrer and The Third Reich are at odds with the Nazis.

EadieB Will Schenke be able to fight for justice over the power of the Nazis? This is a heart-pounding, gripping thriller that makes you race to the end to find out the answers. It is not your typical WWII novel about the war. It is an authentic account of the Nazi party and their attempt to cover up the truth about what is really happening. Unputdownable! If you love historical crime thrillers then you will enjoy this book. 3y
EadieB I will definitely be seeking more books by Scarrow as he is a very talented writer. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for an advanced copy for an honest review. 3y

I have to say I think this has just leapt into the lead as my favourite book of 2022. A great mix of a detective story, historical fiction and a feel for life in early days of the Second World War in Germany. So many themes covered in this book and I just couldn‘t stop reading. Always loved Simon Scarrow‘s writing and this books shows why. In case you can‘t tell I love it and strongly recommend it. This could even be made into a series. 💕
