In the uneasy peace following World War I, nurse Bess Crawford runs into trouble and treachery in Irelandin this twelfth book in the New York Times bestselling mystery series. The Great War has finally come to an end, but tensions remain high throughout Europe. In Ireland, no one has forgotten the bloody 1916 Easter Rising that fought to end British rule in the country. Besss old friend, nurse Eileen Flynn, returns to her isolated Irish village where two factions continue to battle against each other. Eileens time with the British army makes her a target for retaliation. Her missing cousin, who was active in the rising and is still being hunted by the British, is her only protection. Despite concerns about her safety, Bess keeps her promise to her wartime friend and travels to Ireland to be part of Eileens wedding party. But on her arrival, Bess discovers that the groom has gone missing. Then a body is fished from the sea. The villagers are hungry to see justice carried outfor wrongdoings new and oldand Eileens protection is running out. But clearing her name may mean sacrificing another beloved friends neck to the noose instead. Bess must unravel a dark, deceptive plot before someone she loves dies.

As always, it‘s wonderful to check into the Bess Crawford world. This time she‘s in Ireland for a wedding during a very volatile, dangerous time following WW1. The groom and his best man go missing, and Bess is torn between leaving for her own safety and solving the mystery. I enjoyed this addition but was a bit disappointed that the Bess/Simon relationship is so slow being resolved. I‘m anxious to see how that plays out. 4.5/5⭐️ 🔻

TheAromaofBooks I felt the same way about their relationship! I don't know if the authors want it to be resolved when they end the series or what, but it seems like it is moving unnaturally slowly! 2y

My son has been tasked with finding books I want to read. Today we visited Windsor library which is housed in a gorgeous brick building. Windsor & Wethersfield vie to be the first English settlement in CT. Miss Martha S. Clapp and Mr. H.E. Sawyer, who was the principal of the Public High School at the time, opened a subscription library. It was housed in different spaces until 1901 when this building was purchased.

In the latest addition to the always-enjoyable Bess Crawford series, Bess gets an inside look at the "Irish Trouble" in 1919. With the same vividness used to describe the Front in earlier books, the author brings to life the rifts and unease of Ireland shortly before independence. Bess doesn't know whom she can trust.

(Note: There are some references to Romany/Travellers that are period-appropriate but jarring because of their bigotry.)

robinb @ScientistSam I have not, but it‘s on my TBR. I usually try to wait until each one comes down a little in price…but it‘s hard! 😂 But I‘m caught up with the rest so I‘m ready when I get to it. 😊 Love this series and so glad to hear you enjoyed this latest one. 😘 3y

Two of my favorite mystery series had new additions this summer - Bess Crawford & Kate Burkholder - and they came in at the library at the same time!! This one wasn't my favorite of the Bess Crawford series as it felt a little meandery and not as urgent as the circumstances should have, if that makes sense. However, I really like that the authors have decided to continue Bess's story beyond WWI & it was interesting to learn more about what was⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) happening in Ireland during this volatile time. Overall I highly recommend this series (in order).

Apparently I sent this one back to the library without taking a picture!!

Bookzombie I have only read the first Bess book. I really enjoyed it so I need to get moving on the series. I‘m all caught up with Kate Burkholder though. 🙂 (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookzombie - I really like the Bess Crawford books & feel like the setting of them is done so well. I also love the Kate Burkholder books - another series where the background/setting feels realistic and balanced. 3y

Have I mentioned that I love Bess Crawford? I love Bess Crawford.

And I really hope there's another one planned, because that was a bit of a cliffhanger!
