so-soNeal and Jarrod Shusterman‘s YA fantasy is a sadly misfiring affair that aims to convey how “insidious, seductive and dangerous” these drugs can be but is hampered by world building that doesn‘t quite click, a competition that fails to convince and inconsistent messaging on whether drugs have an inherent morality of their own or are merely tools that humans need to beware resulting in a stilted read with a “abuse of drugs is bad, mmkay?‘ vibe.
so-soThis felt like such an interesting premise…Reading it, I don‘t even think it coulda been better executed per se, but I guess there‘s not a ton of places it can go. So it‘s more of a book about the ride, yknow? It wasn‘t bad, by any means, but it wasn‘t great either. I really love Shustermans books, so this def left me with so-so vibes. But not to say others won‘t enjoy this one!
pickWhat if the drugs we‘ve come to know were gods, sort of like the gods in Clash of the Titans? And their goal is to get the mortals “worshipping” them to the giant party in the sky?
This is a great YA fantasy twist on the story of addiction, and the main character is Roxy, or as we know her, Oxy. She‘s not a villain, she‘s just doing what she‘s been created to do, right? Can she help it if sometimes things get out of hand?

pickThe Shustermans have such great imaginations for touchy topics to young audiences.
A brother is being seduced by Roxy (aka OxyContin), while Addison (aka Adderall) is working on his sister. As each of these drugs race to create an addict, other drugs are introduced who want to take turn.
Interesting approach and I hope it makes teens think twice before being seduced by drugs. I enjoyed this as an adult, too. I loved the multi-narrator #audiobook

I started with the tagged book. It is a really creative way of writing about the teen opiate crisis. I‘m digging it.
The other two were impulse holds, but I‘ve really been enjoying science writing this year, so why not! 😉
