Dear Miss Metropolitan
Dear Miss Metropolitan: A Novel | Carolyn Ferrell
11 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
Introducing an extraordinary and original writer whose first novel explores the intersections of grief and rage, personal strength and healing--and what we owe one another. Fern seeks refuge from her mothers pill-popping and boyfriends via Soul Train; Gwen finds salvation in the music of Prince much to her congregations dismay and Jesenia, miles ahead of her classmates at her gifted and talented high school, is a brainy and precocious enigma. None of this matters to Boss Man, the monster who abducts them and holds them captive in a dilapidated house in Queens. On the night they are finally rescued, throngs line the block gawking and claiming ignorance. Among them is lifetime resident Miss Metropolitan, advice columnist for the local weekly, but how could anyone who fancies herself a newspaperwoman have missed a horror story unfolding right across the street? And why is it that only two of the three girlsnow womenwere found? The mystery haunts the two remaining victim girls who are subjected to the further trauma of becoming symbols as they continuously adapt to their present and their unrelenting past. Like Emma Donoghues Room, Ferrells Dear Miss Metropolitan gives voice to characters surviving unimaginable tragedy. Inspired by real events, the story is inventively revealed before, during, and after the ordeal in this singular and urgent novel.

My last book finished in February… but it took me a while to get my thoughts down about it. With a complex writing style and brutal subject matter, I think this is a book readers are either going to love or hate. I loved it, and the audio is fantastic.

Difficult call. Can‘t say I liked it, but it was different. Overall, the writing style didn‘t work for me, and it seems like there were a lot of dead ends, but the subject was interesting, the format was unique, and the events in the book were based on real events. I wasn‘t a fan of the execution, but I can appreciate the effort that went into this.

I‘m struggling to rate this one. Reminiscent of Tiffany Jackson‘s writing, which I love, but somehow different. Not quite as good. If it didn‘t appear to be based on the Michelle Knight/Amanda Berry/Gina DeJesus story here in Cleveland, I probably wouldn‘t have finished. Especially the middle of the story. Not really one I‘d recommend to others but I‘m sure this will find its readers who will disagree.

Reecaspieces I have this…good to know! 3y

I have no idea why this one hasn't gotten a lot of attention. Or maybe it has and I'm the one not paying attention. Three girls go missing in Queens. 10 years later 2 of them turn up at a house with a small child. How did the neighbors not notice? That's always the question, right? And where is the third girl?

Goodreads win! I know this book has inspired a lot of fierce debate so I‘m excited to see what the fuss is about. #bookmail

TrishB Very mixed views. Look forward to yours. It‘s mega expensive here so would have to be convinced. 3y

I get why this book is divisive, but I really liked it. It‘s less about the plot and more about the various characters‘ internal journies and how trauma shapes them. The author also doesn‘t unfold the narrative in a linear or traditional fashion. I liked the poetic nature of the prose, but it‘s a style that won‘t work for everyone. I think those readers (like myself) that enjoy deep character dives will like this.

I'm listening to the ALC of this on LibroFM (because I'm a sucker for Bahn Turpin narrating anything). It reminds me of ROOM meets DEACON KING KONG. Dark, complex narrative structure, mult.POV. Three girls-turned-women confined for 10 years. (More in comments)
Out 7/6

rachelm It's the kind of novel that I'm not sure I'd have the constitution to read with my eyes, but Bahni Turpin's audio interpretation highlights the absurd, the funny, the human in the middle of a very dark book. Recommend it in audio, for sure. 3y

☹️I had really high hopes for this book. The synopsis suggests a novel based on a real life event. I love psychological/true crime thrillers. By page 20, I was suffering. I am not sure what the style of the book is but I thought that it was terrible. There is probably a really good story somewhere in this book, I just couldn't find it. The story got lost in the words. If anyone reads it & "gets" it please tag me.

KatieDid927 I have an ARC as well that I plan to start in a week or two. Will report back. The reviews are so mixed I‘m going in as blind and expectation free as possible. 4y

I received this ARC and this is the 3rd time I have picked it up this month. What do you all think about the style?

I'm on the struggle bus. The language is weird, poetic, lyrical. Like, when you have a word count on a paper & you're coming up short.
So instead of saying "the door" you say "the hollow-cored pinewood mounted on hinges of brass dulled black, supportive but unseen for years."
Help!
