This biography book is very good because its facts and events have been well documented and it was obviously carefully researched before. It takes an objective stance and recognizes various points of things going on around that time, yet still works to show justice of the life in Claudette Colvin. The narrative is also fast moving, making it easier to comprehend and feel connected to for the readers.

I think this book would be very enjoyable for kids in a classroom. It accurately depicts the true history of what happened long ago. It also shows an important part of history that all kids seem to be interested in. I believe it is good to introduce reads like this, that tell the whole truth of what happened and keep kids engaged with their history!

Claudette Colvin by Phillip Hoose published in 2009 is a biography that tells the story of Claudette Colvin. Claudette witnessed Rosa Parks refuse her seat on the bus and that struck a nerve in her. She decided she‘d had enough of the Jim Crow segregation laws.

Very detailed book with pictures from the time period. Very long with long paragraphs which may be hard for young children to follow. Tells about an important time of history through the eyes of people who experienced it

I really enjoyed this book about Claudette Colvin. Claudette was a teenage African-American girl who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, AL bus about a year before Rosa Parks. Claudette was arrested and eventually was a key plaintiff in Browder v. Gayle, the case that ruled segregated buses unconstitutional. I was very interested in learning about this young woman I had never heard of. This book will go in my classroom.

Reviewsbylola I‘ve never heard of her either. What a shame she is so unknown. 6y

Did you know that before Rosa Parks there was a teenage girl who was arrested for not giving up her seat on the bus? This book tells the story of Claudette Colvin and how her courage set into motion a massive movement. There are pictures, newspaper articles, and explanations of events happening at that time peppered through out Claudette's account. I think I am going to have my kids read this over the summer!

#todayinsj 1955 Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on the bus, nine months before Rosa Parks made the same action.
