Egg and Spoon
Egg and Spoon | Gregory Maguire
"A beautiful reminder that fairy tales are at their best when they illuminate the precarious balance between lighthearted childhood and the darkness and danger of adulthood." School Library Journal(starred review) Elena Rudina lives in the impoverished Russian countryside, and there is no food. But then a train arrives in the village, a train carrying a cornucopia of food, untold wealth, and a noble family destined to visit the Tsar in Saint Petersburga family that includes Ekaterina, a girl of Elenas age. When the two girls lives collide, an adventure is set in motion, an escapade that includes mistaken identity, a monk locked in a tower, a prince traveling incognito, andin a starring role only Gregory Maguire could have conjuredBaba Yaga, witch of Russian folklore, in her ambulatory house perched on chicken legs.

1. I wish I didn't have to work, largely because my health is poor. But I also just want to move abroad--Sweden, Norway, Finland, or Iceland, and live a quiet, easy, hygge life.
2. I remember really enjoying Egg & Spoon by Gregory Maguire. I love the idea of having an ambulatory house on chicken legs (Baba Yaga), where I can travel to all the lands I dream of, w/o having to leave my home behind. I can take it with me wherever I go! #TwoforTuesday

TheBookHippie I love Baba Yaga. 10mo

Oh wow! What an original and thoroughly entertaining story. It has been TOO long since this adult has read a fairy tale. Pure delight and unending humor. A perfect read for these tough times 🌈

Egg and Spoon by Gregory Maguire was amazing. If I had more time i‘d read the whole book but for now I read chapter one. It is about how heaven is real and all of humanitys greatest geniuses are up in heaven spending their eternity‘s in creative collaborations. And whispering to us on earth for enjoyment. This is an amazing read and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I really liked the characters in this - none of the children were perfect, but they were all trying and a Baba Yaga slightly unmoored from linear time. I loved the life it gave to the old folktales without feeling like they lost their character

Quick, fun read. Baba Yaga's character is extremely entertaining throughout the entire story. No, it's no Wicked, and it follows Maguire's typical writing style (which a lot of people find boring), but still enjoyable if you like reimagined Russian fairy tales. I would give it a 3/5 overall. It would be a really good book to read out loud with a middle aged kid.

Enjoyable for about 80% of the time, with playful descriptions and evocative humor. There is however the nagging 20% that I can't ignore- sappy... okay, predictable... well that's where McGuire walks... it just starts to drag at the end with little pops and fizzles rather than a satisfying BANG!

I need to buy this book in physical form because it has some great quotes and was fun to read. I still highly recommend listening to the audio however as the narration is on point 👌

KCorter I agree! The narrator highlights the humor nicely. 5y

A uniquely written book that features odd, quirky, and enjoyable characters. It did take me a little while to get into the story, and I found the ending to be a bit slow, but overall I really enjoyed this book. Also, Baba Yaga is the best!

A new book haul, courtesy of Target and library book sale! Gonna pick up Egg & Spoon first, after coming off of Gillian Flynn's: Dark Places, I'm desperate for a more light hearted read. 😬

After lots of nonfiction reading on heavy subjects, I was looking for a fun, light-hearted fantasy, and this book did the job. It's basically a fairy tale set in the author's version of Tsarist Russia in which poverty, famine, and inequality abound, but so also do magic, whimsy, and mythical creatures. While the zany plot and characters kept me laughing, at times the narrator's poetic observations almost brought me to tears. An enjoyable ride.

Gleeful romp through Tsarist Russia featuring cameos by Baba Yaga and Rasputin. Very much like Joan Aiken's work.

As a humoured fan of the Wicked series, Egg and Spoon seems like more of a teen kids novel, as something I'd have enjoyed more for the age appropriated feel. I loved the cover art and did like the story. Not quite the Baba Yaga I imagined, but an interesting likeable Maguire character. Fairly good.

The characters were the best part, especially Baba Yaga. This line from a description of her board game is just one example of the many cultural references that made me laugh. However, the story drug on, I often wondered where it was headed, and the end left me wanting more resolution. #audiobooksync #audiobook

Daisey I listened to this on audio, and I thought the narrator did a fantastic job with the different characters. 8y
CaitlinSiem I don't know if you've read Deathless by Catherynne M Valente or not, but it's a fantastic twist on Russian folklore. Baba Yaga makes an appearance and she's quite the character. 8y
Daisey @CaitlinSiem Thanks for the recommendation. I really haven't read much that has to do with Russian folklore or history and would love to try some more. 8y

Daisey I'm listening to this as well, and it got better for me when Baba Yaga appeared. However, it's still not wowing me. I feel like it just keeps going and going, not sure where it's headed. 8y

My view from the tractor today while field cultivating and listening to an audiobook. This book had a slow start, but it has gotten more interesting since the appearance of Baba Yaga.

Caryl I liked this one! Read Candace Flemming's The Family Romanov (YA nonfiction) right after this one, which made them both extra-interesting. 8y
