Mehso-so

I'm glad my introduction to Peters was her Amelia Peabody series. Not sure I'd have read them if I'd found this first which would be a tragedy. I liked this book for the return to Luxor & the Valley of the Kings.I felt immersed in the location & loved the description of the tomb that was found. But Althea is no Peabody & John is certainly no Emerson. In fact the sexual politics are rather icky & having them get together kinda ruined the end for me.

Pickpick

This stand-alone thriller really just made me want to reread Peters's Amelia Peabody series haha this one was perfectly fine but lacked some zip. However, the Egyptian setting was done brilliantly as always. A soft pick - fun as a one-off read, but not where I would recommend starting if you haven't read anything by Peters before.

Ruthiella Ooh! I am making my way through the Amelia Peabody series (just finished book 9). I didn‘t know she also wrote a stand alone! 😃 3y

TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - Yes, she was a fairly prolific author, actually. I don't know if you know, but Elizabeth Peters is actually her pen name (real name Barbara Mertz) so she also published books under her real name & the pen name Barbara Michaels!! She wrote a lot of suspense/historical suspense. I haven't loved all of them and a couple of her books as Michaels (which seem to be more melodramatic to me for some reason??) I didn't even finish, but I ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) really love the Amelia Peabody series the most and just fell in love with all the characters, even if I did get a little tired of Emerson's anti-religion rants sometimes lol I just wanted the series to go on forever!!! 3y
Ruthiella Emerson LOL! It‘s his general bellowing that can get to me. I only read about two books a year to make my heart grow fonder, since they are fairly formulaic. Now that Ramses is older, is FINALLY allowed to finish a sentence. 😂 I‘ll check out Michaels/Mertz/Peters other stuff when done. I only knew about the Vicky Bliss series. (edited) 3y
CarolynM @Ruthiella I love everything that woman wrote, she was so witty and clever and had the perfect touch with romance. If you thought Ramses was great as a child you ain't seen nothing yet🤣 and then there's the incomparable John Smythe (sigh) in the Vicky Bliss books... I could go on but I'll just mention my favourite of the stand alones 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - I kind of forgot about how annoying Ramses was when he was a kid, mostly because she insisted on writing him with a lisp - something that obviously doesn't bother me in real life - but does get a LITTLE annoying when you have to read it for pages on end LOL But he becomes one of my favorite characters later in the series, so I go with it haha I know what you mean about taking your time with a series - I've been doing that with ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Swallows & Amazons - I absolutely love every book (I've never read them before) but don't think I would have enjoyed them so thoroughly if I'd read them all right in a row. Two or three a year has been about right - only one left, though, and I'm so sad!!!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @CarolynM - Oooo I actually don't think I've read that one yet! I did enjoy Vicky Bliss (although not as much as Amelia). But I'm definitely adding the one you recommended to the list!!! 3y

Thanks to getting sucked into this one after finishing The Ex Hex, I ended this month's #AnyWayYouReadathon very close to my actual goal of 1200 pages - 1015 felt like a solid showing, considering I wasn't expecting to work on Saturday but I did lol
