Hot, Hot Chicken
Hot, Hot Chicken: A Nashville Story | Rachel Louise Martin
9 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
These days, hot chicken is a must-try Southern food. Restaurants in New York, Detroit, Cambridge, and even Australia advertise that they fry their chicken Nashville-style. Thousands of people attend the Music City Hot Chicken Festival each year. The James Beard Foundation has given Princes Chicken Shack an American Classic Award for inventing the dish. But for almost seventy years, hot chicken was made and sold primarily in Nashvilles Black neighborhoodsand the story of hot chicken says something powerful about race relations in Nashville, especially as the city tries to figure out what it will be in the future. Hot, Hot Chicken recounts the history of Nashvilles Black communities through the story of its hot chicken scene from the Civil War, when Nashville became a segregated city, through the tornado that ripped through North Nashville in March 2020.

A fascinating look at how a local dish becomes an international sensation, it‘s origins, and the impact that a city‘s racial divisions can have on the perception of history. Well researched and personal, this gem does what the best of #nonfiction does-ensure that the reader sees both the overarching narrative and the individual perspectives to experience the full story. And it really makes you crave hot chicken! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Ebook, Zootopia, 1 dog under the blanket, and a 5 year old with covid. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Quarantined downstairs at my parents while my dad, also positive, quarantines upstairs and my mom, negative, has run of the upstairs.

TrishB Hope you‘re all on the mend soon! 2y

HeathHof Ooh, these all sound good! Top three would probably be The invention of Wings, Hot Hot Chicken and The Indigo Girl but I'd be happy to read any of them. 3y
sharread These look amazing. I'm open any you pick. I haven't read any of them either. 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Clever cover/title. While this does center around the Prince‘s Hot Chicken story, it‘s about 2/3 socioeconomic history of Nashville and it‘s post civil war development. Lots of details, but it‘s downright fascinating. That said, if you‘re not a Nashville native - or a transplant like me - I‘m not sure how much this will appeal. Regardless, trying to solve the mystery of just who the scorned woman was in the Prince‘s origin story was fun.

underground_bks LOVE that you got this book about your city from your local indie! 😍 3y
britt_brooke @underground_bks Thank you! And it was published by Vanderbilt University Press. Nashville all around. 🤩 Makes me happy! 3y

Attempting to grab a few pages while my boys swim with their cousins at my folks‘ house. This book is taking me forever. It‘s very detailed and slow, but an interesting history. 🔥🐔🍽

Flaneurette I‘ve been interested in this since I read the New Yorker article a while back ( about Prince‘s I think?) I hadn‘t heard of it before then and now it‘s everywhere- even Aldi chips have Nashville chicken seasoning! 3y
britt_brooke @Flaneurette Yeah; hot chicken is huge in Nashville and the flavor is being mimicked all over the place. Prince‘s is the original and this book is about it‘s origin, but in telling it, the author goes deep into Nashville‘s socioeconomic history. So, it‘s a bit dry, but interesting. 3y
Flaneurette @britt_brooke do you have a favorite hot chicken restaurant? 3y

britt_brooke @Flaneurette Sadly, I‘ve only been to one so far. 😂 It was touristy, but good: Party Fowl. We live in a Nashville ‘burb, but don‘t venture to the city too often. But we‘re about to get a hot chicken place nearby, though, and I can‘t wait to try it! Have you tried any? It‘s super hot! 😅 3y
Flaneurette @britt_brooke I‘ve not tried any yet, hopefully some day and the spicier the better! 3y
britt_brooke @Flaneurette You‘re brave! 🔥🔥 3y

A little extra soccer practice for the 9 year old + a few friends = bonus reading time for mom. 🙌🏼

mrsmarch Stacked!!! 📚 🐓 🔥 3y
britt_brooke @mrsmarch It‘s an interesting read so far! It‘s based on the Prince‘s Hot Chicken story, but is also a socioeconomic history of Nashville. 3y

I chickened out this weekend. The title on the left is probably mostly of interest to people from Nashville. It‘s been interesting to hear the discussions lately of cooking, and food, and when the line to cultural appropriation somehow gets crossed…

Yay! My Independent Bookstore Day goodies just arrived. Showing some Nashville pride with my book selections. 🤩 The Bookshop in East Nashville is the cutest little shop with amazing curation. A must-visit if you‘re ever in Music City. 🪕

Prairiegirl_reading So if You could only visit one between this and parnassus which one would you choose? How lucky to live in a city with great options for independent book stores!! 4y

britt_brooke @CBee We live about a mile from his old estate! Sadly, it burned down a few years ago, but someone recently bought the property and I think they‘re trying to replicate the original. We‘ll see! 🤞🏻 4y
britt_brooke @TNbookworm Super cute! I needed another tote like a hole in the head, but here we are. 😂 4y
britt_brooke @Prairiegirl_reading That‘s a REALLY tough choice. Parnassus is much larger and has a gorgeous children‘s section, but The Bookshop is so cozy and has a fantastic selection in a minimal space. Ugh! Idk! 😂😅 Because I live about 30 mins from both, I‘ll go with The Bookshop. I wanna make sure she stays open. Parnassus is pretty secure, I think. We are super spoiled here! 💚 4y
CBee @britt_brooke oh my gosh!! I had no idea it burned down - so happy to hear someone bought it and might try to replicate it ♥️ 4y
britt_brooke @CBee One of the Bee Gee‘s owned it at the time. It was before we moved here and I‘m sad we didn‘t get to see the original in person. 4y
CBee @britt_brooke oh, that's too bad! 😞 4y
