Yours Cheerfully: A Novel | AJ Pearce
31 posts | 24 read | 11 to read
From the author of the jaunty, heartbreaking winner (People) and international bestseller Dear Mrs. Bird, a new charming and uplifting novel set in London during World War II about a plucky aspiring journalist. London, November 1941. Following the departure of the formidable Henrietta Bird from Womans Friend magazine, things are looking up for Emmeline Lake as she takes on the challenge of becoming a young wartime advice columnist. Her relationship with boyfriend Charles (now stationed back in the UK) is blossoming, while Emmys best friend Bunty, still reeling from the very worst of the Blitz, is bravely looking to the future. Together, the friends are determined to Make a Go of It. When the Ministry of Information calls on Britains womens magazines to help recruit desperately needed female workers to the war effort, Emmy is thrilled to be asked to step up and help. But when she and Bunty meet a young woman who shows them the very real challenges that women war workers face, Emmy must tackle a life-changing dilemma between doing her duty and standing by her friends. Every bit as funny, heartwarming, and touching as Dear Mrs. Bird, Yours Cheerfully is a celebration of friendshipa testament to the strength of women and the importance of lifting each other up, even in the most challenging times.

Emmy Lake works hard to become a respected reporter working for Woman's Friend publication. The paper decides to do a report highlighting the efforts of women who are working to support the men at war by working in machine shops. When Emmy finally gets all the necessary approvals to conduct the interviews she learns more than she imagined.

Very much like Dear Mrs. Bird, this historical novel was a quick read that had just enough reality to not be too fluffy for my taste. I enjoyed the exploration into the lives of British women war workers. This was my #bookspin for September. @TheAromaofBooks

Cute - left off where the first book started, setting up for a third. I like that Emmy is maturing in her behaviours and the conversations she has with her friends and colleagues. The relationship between Emmy and Bunty is lovely :)

I liked this second installment of “the Emmy Lake Chronicles” even more than the first — largely thanks to its focus on Britain‘s women war workers. This gave me a glimpse at a practical problem I‘d never thought much about: childcare during WWII. Nobody‘s ever mentioned who was watching Rosie the Riveter‘s kids, you know?

At any rate, I always appreciate books that spark my curiosity and send me on a research tangent.

KathyWheeler You know, now that I think about it, I‘ve never read anything about what women did for child care during WWII. 2y

Just finished this lovely audiobook on the Libby App. This is a gentle look at war time London. The second book in what is hopefully a series. Emmy is working at a women‘s magazine during the day and fire warden at night. She‘s seeing her army boyfriend Charles and P taking on women‘s rights issues. I‘m jealous of her endless energy and enthusiasm. Will definitely listen to the next one - the reader has a very good voice 👍💚🐉 #Jumpstart2023

Aims42 Third and fourth book are happening, confirmed by the author 🥳🙌 I love these books too 2y

tpixie @Aims42 @Dragon great to hear! I have Book #2 because I listened to the author and it sounded interesting. But I haven‘t read book when you‘re at! Maybe I‘ll wait for book 3 ( coming in March!) and read them three in a row, and then patiently wait for the fourth! (edited) 2y

While not quite as funny as the first, this sequel to Dear Mrs Bird was a delight. Definitely recommend both.

#two4tuesday
1. Tagged. Even with the daily struggles of living during a war, this book shows how strong, independent and capable women were whilst the men were fighting.
2. I‘d love to see how Emmy continues with her advice column now that she is married d as no if her advice would change in any way.

TheSpineView Thanks for playing and happy Tuesday! 3y

This is the follow up to Dear Mrs Bird.
London, 1941, Emmy takes on the challenge of becoming a war time advice columnist instead. Her relationship with her boyfriend is blossoming and her best friend Bunty is still recovering from the worst of the Blitz.
The characters in this book were full of life and determination despite the war raging on, the author is still able to engage the reader to help understand the daily struggles during the war.

TheAromaofBooks I've had Dear Mrs Bird on my shelf for two years! 3y

This is a sequel to Dear Mrs Bird. It continues the story with Emmeline Lake still at the magazine but Mrs Bird gone. It's set in London during WWII and all the Women's magazines are given a special project by the Information Ministry. It's really good, with serious issues, and the characters are all lovely. I hope there is another book.

lazydaizee I enjoyed Dear Mrs Bird, now I will look out for this book. 3y

Yours Cheerfully by AJ Pearce...

This is the 2nd book in the Emmy Lake Chronicles series. It's not necessary to have read the 1st book, Dear Mrs. Bird. This can be read as a stands alone but I will go back and read that book now.

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and in particular, I've found that I really enjoy any book set in London, France, or Paris and I also enjoy historical fiction based during (cont in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy the 2nd World War. The story of Emmeline Lake is lighter and less weighty than many of the stories that you read set during this time frame however, I enjoyed this story and the different perspective it offers. This book marries the serious subject of war with a bit of comedy and dose of romance for a winning combination. This story was a little slow paced for me at the beginning but picked up the pace near the middle and by the 75% (cont)

TheHeartlandBookFairy 75% mark I had a difficult time putting if down! Addictive! I'm so glad to find out that there is a book preceding this one and hopefully another book to follow!

I'm so happy Dear Mrs. Bird got a sequel. Emmy, Bunty, and the gang have such interesting journeys, and the focus on working women's issues at the start of the war was compelling without ever being too heavy, thanks to Emmy's madcap narration. #historicalfiction
