I Am a Girl from Africa
I Am a Girl from Africa | Elizabeth Nyamayaro

A powerful memoir about a girl from Africa whose near-death experience sparked a dream that changed the world. She squeezes my hand and smiles. I am here to feed hungry children in the village, because as Africans we must uplift each other. I dont understand what it means to uplift others, but I nod. I know that I can finally stand up. I will search for food. I will live. When severe draught hit her village in Zimbabwe, Elizabeth, then eight, had no idea that this moment of utter devastation would come to define her life purpose. Unable to move from hunger, she encountered a United Nations aid worker who gave her a bowl of warm porridge and saved her life. This transformative moment inspired Elizabeth to become a humanitarian, and she vowed to dedicate her life to giving back to her community, her continent, and the world. Grounded by the African concept of UbuntuI am because we areI Am a Girl from Africa charts Elizabeths quest in pursuit of her dream from the small village of Goromonzi to Harare, London, and beyond, where she eventually became a Senior Advisor at the United Nations and launched HeForShe, one of the worlds largest global solidarity movements for gender equality. For over two decades, Elizabeth has been instrumental in creating change in communities all around the world; uplifting the lives of others, just as her life was once uplifted. The memoir brings to vivid life one extraordinary womans story of persevering through incredible odds and finding her true callingwhile delivering an important message of hope and empowerment in a time when we need it most.

The author describes in these memories, both her growing up in Zimbabwe, as well as traditions, believes and the problems/obstacles that she had to overcome to achieve her goal - work for the UN and to create changes in society/world. This book is a perfect example of strong will, determination and what it means to live with purpose. #ReadingAfrica2022 #Zimbabwe

B&N announced this book is out in paperback now. Y‘all I highly recommend it. I listened to the audio. We learn so much about #Zimbabwe and much of Africa. And the author is a hero, climbing out of starvation and poverty, to cleaning toilets in London, to become a world-class leader (whose work has been praised by Emma Watson). Read it for no other reason than it‘s perfect for #readingAfrica2022 and you‘ll be left so inspired.

Librarybelle Thanks for posting! 3y

The author‘s life is a beautiful example of how a small act of kindness can change the world. When she was 8, she almost starved to death in her village in #Zimbabwe when a United Nations worker (the woman in the blue dress) gave her a bowl of porridge. She swore then she would grow up to work for the UN. There and in her subsequent employment she has absolutely changed the world implementing programs to improve access to healthcare to saving ⬇️

Texreader Women from domestic violence from Finland to Malawi to the US. The author reads her own memoir in this audiobook about her life in unbelievable poverty, becoming a janitor in London in order to survive, as she navigates her way to finally get a foot in the door at the UN. This is an impressive story in countless ways and I cannot more highly recommend it. #readingafrica2022 @BarbaraBB @librarybelle 3y
BarbaraBB That is quite a recommendation! Thanks! 3y
Librarybelle Oh! Stacking! 3y
Texreader @BarbaraBB I had a couple of minor issues: it got a little bit preachy but not so much to discourage reading it, and while she‘s brilliant at voicing other people in her life, her voice can be loud and stringent after a while. I got used to it because her story is magnificent. I think it‘s a perfect book for girls to learn how they can grow up to make a big difference with hard work and tenacity, no matter your birth station. 3y
Texreader @Librarybelle I hope you enjoy it. It‘s a pretty quick read too and can count for a number of African countries for #readingafrica2022 because of all the work she did in various countries, including #Uganda and #Malawi. 3y

A memoir from the woman who founded the HeForShe program with the UN. Her childhood in Zimbabwe was surrounded with poverty, but also with love and family who wanted the best for her. I found some of the political and legislative parts of this dry, but overall really interesting book.

#bookreport @Cinfhen

I finished 2 excellent books (Becoming Wild and Half Broke Horses) and two okay ones (These Witches Don‘t Burn and Written in the Stars.)

I Am A Girl From Africa was recommended by Jenny Lawson as an additional read for the #FantasticStrangelings bookclubbers and I was able to get it first from the library.

I always read Bohjalian when he‘s got a new one.

I wanted to read Dead Djinn before Clark‘s new novel 😁.

AmyG I am curious how the Chris Bohjalian book is...so please let us know. 4y
