King Solomon's Mine
King Solomon's Mine | H. Rider Haggard
Now, in 1907, on the occasion of the issue of this edition, I can only add how glad I am that my romance should continue to please so many readers. Imagination has been verified by fact; the King Solomon's Mines I dreamed of have been discovered, and are putting out their gold once more, and, according to the latest reports, their diamonds also; the Kukuanas or, rather, the Matabele, have been tamed by the white man's bullets, but still there seem to be many who find pleasure in these simple pages. That they may continue so to do, even to the third and fourth generation, or perhaps longer still, would, I am sure, be the hope of our old and departed friend, Allan Quatermain.

📚📚📚 Published in the 1880‘s as an adventure novel that inspired such legends as Indians Jones, this novel is just interesting enough for the imagination to fill in the blanks - especially for its first readers. Modern readers might find it stilted, slow, & out of sync with modern ideologies. Keep historical context in mind if you choose to read this.

Daisey I recently read Haggard‘s book She and felt some of the same. The writing absolutely shows development of adventure stories but also so much a product of its time. 3y
Susanita IIRC there was a movie adaptation in the 80‘s that wasn‘t very good. 3y

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 149.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

Three Englishmen go in search of the legendary mines with the help of an ancient map, participate in a civil war, then discover a hoard of riches in a hidden cave. Today, the novel seems racist and misogynist, but it‘s a gripping #adventurous tale, nevertheless. Very Indiana Jones-like.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I still love the old ones, despite the flaws of their time period. In many ways they are a product of their time, so you get a good story with a bit of history about the time period the writer was living in through his writing....if that makes sense. 5y
erzascarletbookgasm @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It does! Even some of my favourite authors‘ works are like that, but I still enjoy reading them. 😊 5y

Just started this 19th century adventure classic on Serial Reader: Alan Quartermain heads off on an expedition with 2 others into the interior of Africa to search for a missing person. Nothing like old fashioned British colonialism, casual racism, and killing elephants to start things off! :-/

I had never heard of this story and I expected little of it, but instead I enjoyed it thoroughly! An old fashioned adventure story, which gripped me from the first page.

It is the adventure of three English men in colonial Africa, looking for the brother of one of them and meeting with quite a few challenges.

It did remind me a bit of Journey to the Centre of the Earth, but I liked this one much better! #1001books

At the risk of posting a really boring photo for a glamorous prompt... here is my book for #lyricalApril #diamonds.

I don't have any books with diamonds on the cover but I did read this book on kindle and diamonds play a prominent role

Cinfhen I just read the blurb and saw the MC is named Alan Quartermain ....made me think back to GH in the 80's with John Stamos, Ricky Martin & Rick Springfield ♥️♥️♥️ 8y
tpixie And even further back- ' Alan Quartermain' was Prince Charming in a Rogers & Hammerstein Cinderella! @Cinfhen (edited) 8y

Daring explorers plunge into the uncharted depths of Africa in seek of family, adventure, and Biblical riches. A great "summer blockbuster" of a book for fans of Indiana Jones. (And if you enjoy it, there are approximately a zillion more books featuring the main character!)
