Road Trip | Beth O'Leary

Two exes reach a new level of awkward when forced to take a road trip together in this endearing and humorous novel by the author of the international bestseller The Flatshare. What if the end of the road is just the beginning? Four years ago, Dylan and Addie fell in love under the Provence sun. Wealthy Oxford student Dylan was staying at his friend Cherry's enormous French villa; wild child Addie was spending her summer as the on-site caretaker. Two years ago, their relationship officially ended. They haven't spoken since. Today, Dylan's and Addie's lives collide again. It's the day before Cherry's wedding, and Addie and Dylan crash cars at the start of the journey there. The car Dylan was driving is wrecked, and the wedding is in rural Scotland--he'll never get there on time by public transport. So, along with Dylan's best friend, Addie's sister, and a random guy on Facebook who needed a ride, they squeeze into a space-challenged Mini and set off across Britain. Cramped into the same space, Dylan and Addie are forced to confront the choices they made that tore them apart--and ask themselves whether that final decision was the right one after all.

This was a fun rom-com about Dylan who is traveling to figure out what‘s next without family money, & he meets Addie who is managing the bed & breakfast. We see their love story unfold in “then” chapters & see why it ended in the “now” chapters when they inadvertently end up traveling to their friend‘s wedding together with her sister, his best friend who hates Addie, and a random guest.
Spicy & sweet & quite the adventurous road trip!

Like The Flatshare, it took me a while to get into this, but once I did I was hooked. The Now/Then structure was annoying until it really made sense. O‘Leary writes books that seem fluffy but have serious depths eventually. Not for everybody, probably, but I‘ve liked both of her books I‘ve read.

The classification has me cracking up. I mean, sure? But…why not.

For those of you doing my #ukroadtrip challenge, I'm aware that some of the counties I've listed may not exist anymore. My suggestion is you search for a book in a town/city that was in that county but put it in the newer category if I have it listed. This may mean certain counties can't be completed, but as there's no time limit on this challenge it doesn't really matter!

@julieclair

julieclair Thanks for the heads up. I am really enjoying this challenge! 2y

Surprisingly serious but smart, thoughtful, and well written. O‘Leary tells the a love story torn apart by depression, jealousy, doubt, pain and a particularly awful ‘friend‘. The #audio kept me listening but there were a couple of moments where I nearly bailed. In the end though, it was a special story of redeeming love, friendship, and family. I walked nearly 3.5 miles to finish listening! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed The Flatshare and The Switch, but couldn't get into this one. It's still on my TBR, though - I think I may have just been in A Mood 😂 2y

Meh.
It was okay.
The storyline was very slow paced and nothing happened until the last third. The characters were just... dull, with the exception of Marcus who simply just needed his teeth knocking out!
The saving grace was how well such sensitive topics were dealt with.

I love spur of the moment trips and this one is right up there. Just the right balance of confidence, adventure and the scary unknown, with a dash of romance dropped in.

This was ultimately a fun rom com that works out perfectly in the end. Some characters were very annoying, but sensitive material was handled pretty well, and everyone went on an emotional journey.

It's a pretty realistic second chance romance with all the ups and downs, but I didn't find characters very lovable..

Because the list of UK counties I found has 113 (!!!) listed, I've decided to do my #ukroadtrip as a no time pressure challenge as I don't know how long it will take to complete (but think it will be more than a year). Feel free to join me! I've added some books already.

jenniferw88 @Bookwormjillk 😊 I understand, I don't really do time pressure so that's part of the reason I haven't set dates! 2y
Librarybelle Thanks! I‘ll sign up after work! 2y

BarbaraBB Yay! I‘m in! 2y
PageShifter This might be a stupid question but is this happening on Storygraph? 2y
jenniferw88 @PageShifter here as well, but mainly on Storygraph to keep track of counties! 2y
rockpools Ooh, this is something I‘ve wanted to do for ages! I‘m in (just very slowly 😊) 2y
jenniferw88 @rockpools I'm going to take my time too 🤣 2y
PageShifter I'll join. Does book have to set in these counties? Might sound stupid but I wanted to be sure it isn't something like where the author is from :D (edited) 2y
jenniferw88 @PageShifter either, I'm trying to make it as stress-free as possible. If you think it fits, it fits! 2y
PageShifter Thank you for your patience :D Then I might have the first book for this challenge coming, author is from one of these counties but it's a fantasy book and that land doesn't even exists :D 2y
Clwojick Oooo! I love a good challenge! 🤗 2y
Cinfhen I‘m gonna try!!! Sounds super challenging but I‘m sure you‘ll offer suggestions 😊♥️ 2y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen well there's no time pressure and you can choose from either story location or author's birthplace, so that should make it easier. There's 203 books already added to StoryGraph so there's some ideas already! And of course I'll offer suggestions. 2y
julieclair This sounds like fun! I'm in! 2y

This was cute RomCom, there were a few laugh out loud moments. I liked the way it shifted from the point of view of each of the main characters.

It did drag a little at times, but still a good read.

I LOVED The Flatshare & liked The Switch a lot but this one didn't appeal to me much. I'm trying to cut all these kids some slack as they're so young- esp in the "then" portions of the book- but most of them were one bad decision after another& it got tedious. He's supposed to be but Marcus was especially hard to take even in the "now" sections when he's supposedly grown so much. I read it all as I wanted to know what happened but it was just eh.

TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed O'Leary's first two books, but just couldn't get into this one. I put it back on my TBR because I may try it again later, but it definitely didn't have much appeal to me 50+ pages in. 3y
