Blackbirds | Chuck Wendig
The first book in the Miriam Black series: A sassy, hard-boiled thriller with a paranormal slant (The Guardian) about a young woman who can see the darkest corners of the future.Miriam Black knows how youre going to die. This makes her daily life a living hell, especially when you cant do anything about it, or stop trying to. Shes foreseen hundreds of car crashes, heart attacks, strokes, and suicides. She merely needs to touch youskin to skin contactand she knows how and when your final moments will occur. Miriam has given up trying to save people; that only makes their deaths happen. But then she hitches a ride with Louis Darling and shakes his hand, and she sees in thirty days that Louis will be murdered while he calls her name. Louis will die because he met her, and Miriam will be the next victim. No matter what she does she cant save Louis. But if she wants to stay alive, shell have to try. Think Six Feet Under co-written by Stephen King and Chuck Palahniuk (SFX), and you have Blackbirds: a visceral, exciting novel about life on the edge.

In this horror novel, Miriam Black is cursed with the ability to see the death of whoever she touches. She roams the country scavenging from those about to die, resigned to witnessing their fates, coping with cigarettes, alcohol and poorly chosen men. One particularly unfortunate choice puts her in the sights of a ruthless psychopath. Definitely not for the squeamish--Miriam is creatively foul-mouthed & the violence when it comes is hyper-violent.

Bailing on this one. Just getting a sense I will not like it. Such bad luck with my #roll100 picks! Both ended up being DNF‘s.

Miriam Black knows how and when you will die.
This was the first book in the Miriam Black series, and I will definitely be reading the second. I realized after I began that it was just what I needed at the moment: very little description, just action and dialogue and a plot that never stopped moving forward.

Entertaining, action-packed, easy to read (hence how I finished it in only a few hours), yet left me wanting more. It lacked a depth and nuance that I had expected in a book with an existential premise. I probably won‘t read the next book. (Also, trigger warnings.) Full review on GR.

This is my #doublespin book for July so I‘m 2 for 2 this month! 🎉🙌🏻

(and yes, I reused my same photo from earlier 😂)

TheAromaofBooks Great progress. And I like that you're showing off your mug again! 😂 4y

wanderinglynn @sudi I thought so too. I wanted the one that said “secretly a mermaid”, but it was a 20oz tall one and I liked the shorter one. 4y

I really liked the concept and enjoyed the story to a certain extent, but the language! I‘m not usually one for pearl-clutching about swear words, but this was over the top. It was like Chuck was just showing off, trying to go for shock value. Maybe it would have been easier to take in print, but on audio it was distracting. I don‘t know if I‘ll continue the series. Probably not.

vivastory Miriam has a way with words 😂 5y

Got this bucket of cuddles on my lap. While I read one handed or he gets mad. 😂😍😺💙 #kittycuddles #catsoflitsy #muchlove #dawwwe #bentleyboo

Kaye I had a pet cat that looked like that when I was a kid. His name was Clarence ( neighbors gave him his name). He was big and strong and powerful. He thought he was the toughest cat in the street, so he didn‘t like it when I dressed him in baby dresses and bonnets and pushed him in my baby buggy. I lost a lot of doll clothes that way. He‘d jump out of the buggy and take off down the street and come home without them on. I miss my tough cat. 😿 (edited) 7y

As a new Android member to litsy. I'm very excited to be here with like minded bookish folks! I figured as my first post why not go with my arm art! this is from the original cover of blackbirds by Chuck Wendig. Art by Joey Hi-Fi. Mirium is not finished but hopefully she will be soon. I picked up this book due to its cover. fell absolutely in love with both the concept and the character. Dark, strong and able to over come so much. #muchlove

TheZenTeacher I love Chuck Wendig's blog "Terrible Minds." I've learned a lot as a writer (and reader) from him. 8y
BookBoggart I never seem to find blogs that keep me interested. So it's wonderful to know his delightful dark mind had one! May have to find it! :) 8y

Just finished this and I love the character of Miriam Black, but the book is a bit messy at times. Miriam can see people's deaths if she touches them. After getting mixed up with a guy with a box, she finds herself trying to change fate. Miriam swears, is snarky, and is tough. My hope is the next book is a bit better than this one. It isn't bad, but it isn't great. I wound up liking it just for Miriam.

Books_Wine_Repeat This pic reminds me of Rocky Horror Picture Show. 🙃 8y

I'm not sure what to say. It's a lot more dark than I'm used to reading. I'll keep going in the series because Miriam as a character is super intriguing.

CaitlinSiem I keep going back and forth with these books. Sometimes I want to dive into them but the reviews make me nervous. 8y

Walking home from the playground with a toddler who fell asleep in the stroller, I needed something to pass the time. Pulled this up on the Kindle app and very glad I did. Tons of fun so far!

Wavering on this one. There were Gaiman-esque elements, but Wendig has his own voice. It was enjoyable but overall something didn't click. Sort of interesting start to a series, though, so I'd probably continue and see if it bears fruit.
