This one was disappointing. I loved the concept of two people (a “hero” and a “villain”) with extraordinary powers meeting somewhere ordinary and becoming allies. The first half pulled me in. The second half dragged badly with reiterations of known information and pacing issues that made the finale anticlimactic. I also was never sure of the tone. The beginning was more serious but the end took aim at some humor that fell mostly flat. #bookspin

I'm not sure what it was about this one that was just a little lackluster. I liked the premise of two people waking up with superpowers but no memories. One becomes a vigilante and one robs banks. There was mystery to solve, as well as action scenes and a cute friendship development. I maybe would have liked it more in print instead of audio.

There were 45 chapters in this book, & of those I would say I thoroughly enjoyed maybe 5, at the most. I felt like the characters were contradictive & highly unlikeable. Additionally, I did not feel anything when the characters were in mortal danger and may or may not have died (I don‘t want to spoil it in case you choose to read it). Overall, I love a good science fiction novel, but sadly this book does not fall into that category in my opinion.

Jamie and Zoe awake in their respective apartments with no memories of their past, but each quickly discovers they have extraordinary abilities. They choose to use their abilities in different ways and when their paths eventually cross, they decide to do something together. It‘s not an amazing book, but I certainly enjoyed reading it and love the fun concept.

I only picked up this book because of the David Bowie song lyric 😆 and I‘m really glad I did!

This feels like a novelization of a superhero comic book. Two average people get superpowers, enemies to teammates to beat the big bad, slight mystery of finding out who they were before the superpowers.

I loved the two main characters, the capabilities of their powers, the action was written well, the ending was a bit cliqued, but still satisfying.

Centique This sounds great! 😊 4y

🎧 Jamie & Zoe wake up with no memory of who they are. They have super powers. Jamie reads/erases minds to rob banks to buy books & coffee. Zoe has strength/speed & uses it to deliver pizza & fight crime.

They meet at a memory-loss support group & start investigating their pasts

The reason for their memory loss is dark. They need to trust each other & decide who they want to be.

I liked the premise but the execution was a little poor.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A superhero story about 2 people who have special abilities but don‘t remember their past. Jamie can erase people‘s memories, which he uses to rob banks to buy books & cat food. The other, Zoe, is fast & strong which she uses to be a food delivery person & occasionally fight crime. Soon they meet & try to find out about their past.

The first half I was all in but then my interest started to dwindle. The end also felt rushed to me & was just eh.

I love amnesia so amnesiac people with powers was exactly my jam. The author said he imagined Ming-Na Wen as Zoe which makes sense. With the push pull of Zoe being punch first, ask questions later and James being the one for more planning it reminded me of the Eleanor/Chidi dynamic from The Good Place.

This was my #doublespin for February! It was a nice, quick super-hero read, with friendship instead of romance building. I‘m counting it for #popsugar “has the same title as a song” as well as for SFFBC‘s “Take a gamble” as far as reading challenge prompts, though it could also work for popsugar‘s “about forgetting”.

Still no bingo! And I failed to read my bookspin - I stalled out on a long read that I thought would be more fun than it was. doh.

Just started Mike Chen‘s latest, WE COULD BE HEROES. The opening two chapters do a nice job setting the tone with a villain who has a conscience (and very good manners) and a hero with a drinking problem. This is gonna be a fun ride. 😸

I liked this superhero flavored tale of friendship and figuring out who you are and what you stand for! The plot lost some steam in the middle but overall I enjoyed spending time with Jamie and Zoe and wanted to figure out their mysterious origin stories right along with them.

#BookMail Alert! Despite getting delayed by the recent winter storm, my copy of Mike Chen‘s latest WE COULD BE HEROES just arrived in my mailbox from Books, Inc bookstore. Can‘t wait to crack into this one. And seriously, delivery got delayed. It was on the truck on Saturday, and then the Post Office pulled a “take-backsy.” Stupid snow.

⭐⭐⭐
This one started out really good, but seemed to sort of lose steam about midway through and just went on a bit too long in my opinion. It was enjoyable but could have been better.

Cute regular guy is a super hero story. Fun, but not too deep. The plot got a little too circular in the second half, but overall a quick and entertaining read. #ARC #Netgalley
