'Dark, sharp and compelling' PETER JAMES 'Fantastic' MARTINA COLE 'Britain's answer to Harry Bosch' MATT HILTON 'A powerful thriller from an explosive new talent' DAVID MARK ______________________ It's Christmas and a serial killer is leaving displayed body parts all over Cumbria. A strange message is left at each scene: #BSC6 Called in to investigate, the National Crime Agency's Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw are faced with a case that makes no sense. Why were some victims anaesthetized, while others died in appalling agony? Why is their only suspect denying what they can irrefutably prove but admitting to things they weren't even aware of? And why did the victims all take the same two weeks off work three years earlier? And when a disgraced FBI agent gets in touch things take an even darker turn. Because she doesn't think Poe is dealing with a serial killer at all; she thinks he's dealing with someone far, far worse - a man who calls himself the Curator. And nothing will ever be the same again . . . Praise for Black Summer: 'Truly mind-blowing' A. A. Dhand 'A book that shines with tension, wit and invention' William Shaw 'Washington Poe - a rising giant in detective fiction' Alison Bruce 'A twisty thriller with a killer plot Ed James 'I loved this book!' Jo Jakeman 'One of the best British crime novels I've read in a long time . . . Simply an unputdownable page-turner' Nick Oldham 'Grabs you from the very first page. A dark and brilliantly twisted crime thriller, bringing back the inimitable Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw' Colin Falconer 'Dark and twisted in all the right places. Poe is a great mix of compelling, complex & charismatic, and well on his way to becoming one of the standout characters in crime fiction' Robert Scragg 'In Tilly and Poe, MW Craven has created a stand-out duo who are two of the most compelling characters in crime fiction in recent years. They deserve to join the ranks of Holmes and Watson, Rebus and Clarke, Hill and Jordan . . .' Fiona Cummins 'Dark, thrilling and unputdownable with sharply drawn characters that stride off the page' Victoria Selman 'Gleefully gory and witty, with a terrific sense of place' Sunday Times

Last weekends reading catch-up was the third in the Washington poe, Tilly Bradshaw series, which is quickly becoming a favourite. In this book, Poe is called to Cumbria to investigate when 3 sets of thumbs are discovered in public places without bodies. The ensuing investigation reveals a criminal who manipulates people to increasingly nasty crimes called The Curator. It's definitely a page turner.

It's Christmas & Washington Poe has been dragged to a baby shower for boss DI Flynn by colleague Tilly, so he is eternally grateful when they get a call about a case. A serial killer is amputating their victims' fingers (one when alive & one from their dead body) & leaving the fingers displayed in public places in Cumbria, including a church font & a butcher's shop. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Alongside the fingers, the cryptic message #BSC6 is left at each scene - not even computer & mathematic whiz Tilly can figure out what this means. A disgraced FBI agent gets in touch & tells him she believes that Poe is dealing with a killer-for-hire called The Curator. Highly organised & always at least two steps ahead, it's going to take all Poe's experience & maverick way of working to catch them. 1y
OutsmartYourShelf Third book in the series & no sign of flagging. Poe's friendship with Tilly is still going strong & there are some lovely humorous moments between the two of them again. The great characters in these books are fast making it one of my favourite crime series. The plot itself was excellently done in the main (although when the FBI agent first contacts Poe there's no mention of him checking out her credentials before they proceed to spill details 1y
OutsmartYourShelf about their respective cases. Just seems a bit odd for police officers) even though some of it was very convenient (the aforementioned FBI call for one). I was smugly thinking I'd worked it all out, when that ending just came out of nowhere. Still, I flew through it so full marks for ingenuity, pace, & that ending. 5🌟

TWs: pregnancy, violence, death, injury/disfigurement detail.

I‘m really enjoying these books. This is third in series. There is a fourth out this June but I‘ll have to wait for paperback later in the year. I love Poe and Tilly. The story gets me in every time and keeps me reading to the very end. Wondering if they will be picked up for a tv series.

My reading time during the week is pretty much non-existent which makes me even more cranky than I am naturally. Here‘s to setting more boundaries and managing expectations so I don‘t end up burning out completely. Also hoping to be able to digest something other than my comfort reads. Oh, but the book was good. Pleasantly gruesome. 😈 #SeriesRead2021

Suet624 I‘m trying not to be too annoyed about my lack of reading time as well. It‘s tough though. 4y

Took today off in case of 💉 side effects. My 50 pound lap dog/big baby is keeping me company while I continue with this thrilling series.

JenReadsAlot Smart. I called in sick today after getting my 2nd dose yesterday. 4y

Hooked_on_books Smart choice. I got the one shot vax on Saturday and I still don‘t feel quite right today. Fevery overnight and a little draggy still. But it means the old immune system is working, so hooray for vaccines! 4y

eanderson Yes!! It really was nuts! Very creative for a genre that can feel repetitive at times. I‘m glad to get another person hooked on MW Craven. 😀😀😀😀 4y

MW Craven is awesome. The sarcasm of Washington Poe shows how sarcastic Craven is. I laughed hard at his author‘s note at the end of the book! 😂 This was one of the more original story lines and the twist I didn‘t see coming! Friggin fantastic. Now I have to wait for the next book in the series to come out! 😟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 First book finished for #20in4

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
TrishB I just finished! This was a bonkers, gasp making twist indeed 😁 4y
eanderson @TrishB it really was! I‘m excited for the next in the series to come out. I bought his Avison Fluke series and plan to start it this weekend. 😀 4y

MicheleinPhilly Outside?!?!?! Even Pickles didn‘t want to go outside this morning. She was like, “I‘ll do my business in the back, I‘m good.” 🥶🥶🥶 4y
eanderson @MicheleinPhilly yep. Outside. Lol! I feel like when cars drive by the drivers are questioning my sanity. Theo is the same way. We will dead weight us to make the process of forcing him to go outside more complicated. 😂 (edited) 4y

One of the few times I planned ahead and ordered the next book from Book Depository because I knew I couldn‘t wait! Okay, I‘ll be honest, I do this A LOT with series on my kindle... even series I haven‘t started with. 🤦‍♀️ I have no regrets with this series! 😀

MicheleinPhilly Girl...I 1-click entire series before reading a single page. I have a problem, clearly. 4y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly same😁 what is wrong with us 🤷‍♀️ 4y
eanderson @MicheleinPhilly @TrishB Yep, I think I have at least 2-4 full series that I haven‘t even read on my kindle. Kim Stone, I 1 clicked that series like my life depended on it! 🤣I feel like to the outside world this behavior would be frowned upon and may be questioned by professionals as an impulse control issue? but here it‘a normal and I makes me happy! 4y

Has anyone read this book? I got it in a Secret Santa exchange with Bert‘s Books where I have a book subscription.

Pictured behind is the chaos of life with a 9 month old. 4 year old relayed chaos out of shot! It‘s hard to get much reading done with these two around.
